Yay! He runs!

Got there, I took all the plugs out, all a good colour, so all good signs the engine is good. Re-gapped them, and cleaned them up. Cleaned the contacts in the dizzy cap, and checked the sprung mechanism in the top, checked spring etc. Cleaned up the rotor arm, but it already looked good, no bad pitting were the mega volts go through. Re-gapped the points also. Then fitted a new battery... Still no go, just cranked. I was getting a spark at the points, and power to the coil, but no spark at the plugs. Stupidly, we only tested plug 4 for a spark, don't know why!

Anyway, after lots of fiddling, we went out, and got some fresh fuel (should have done that originally!) and went out to try and get a new set of leads, thinking maybe the lead from the dizzy to the coil was knacked, figuring the others wouldn't be far off either, also wanted to replace all the plugs while we were at it, might as well, as well as the destroyed air filter, god knows how many miles it had done, it was old! Anyway, couldn't get a set of leads anywhere, but managed to get a single coil to dizzy lead ("king lead"?) - the only one we really wanted to replace anyway. Also got a new set of plugs, at £1.64 each for NGK plugs! Woman on the till used the wrong trade discount account, giving us 78% off instead of our normal rate! Couldn't get an air filter either! Hmm, these places must not have regular Mini customers these days I though, before walking out and seeing a gunmetal coloured Mini parked up!

Anyway, went back, and thought we hadn't tested the coil to dizzy lead, duh! So stuck a plug on the end, and got a spark. Just wasted a fiver... Oh well, now got a spare dizzy to coil lead! So, what was the problem? Well, who knows. Changed the plugs over, and got a spark on every plug! Put some fresh fuel into the carb, and the rest of the gallon in the tank. I jumped in, and tried to start it again, fingers crossed! He burst into life! Bit wheezy, but ran well! Sounded great too! Think it might have had the box removed, as it doesn't have a sports exhaust tip, but sounds pretty good, and the guy I went to see it with thought it had a sports exhaust... Maybe just had the box removed though... Anyway, I was beaming ear to ear, but, must have a dodgy lead on plug 4? They are carbon ones, so maybe they've oxidised or broken down, if thats the right term (gone white) and aren't making good conduction? Will replace the whole set anyway. What are the £15 Rover high performance ones on Mini Spares like? Seem a better choice than the cheap £11 carbon ones?

Anyway, after some tweaking he was running well!

Throttle cable was sticking, but after some oiling, and working in, it seemed to loosen up, and wasn't revving like mad. Originally after giving it a bit of juice to start, we thought it was idling very high, until I realised the throttle was sticking :) Choke cable also won't lock, and has alot of slack IIRC. So no messing about, going to order both cables when I make my Mini Spares order.

Took the rear blue lenses off, and think they might have been sprayed, so i'm going to have a scrub and see if I can get them to look better, clear will look better, but I still want orange/amber/standard MK3 (I think? Got reverse lights built in) rear lenses, so will keep an eye out on ebay for some (PM me if you have any!). While taking them off I realised I needed new seals/gaskets for the lenses, and some new screws for them, one was so rusted up it 99% rounded off, but with some pressure it came out.

So, for next time i'm down there, I need an air filter, ignition lead set, rear light seals/gaskets, rear lens screw set, maybe some new rear lenses (orange/standard ones), throttle cable, and choke cable. Will do an oil change, and put a new oil filter on sometime too before MOT time in January.

Also needs a good clean inside, a wash and polish, some surface rust sorted, some chips sorting out, maybe new tyres all round before MOT, some splits in sidewalls, not sure if they are bad enough though. New windscreen seals, gutter trim. Also want a headunit, spots, white mirrors, new arches, maybe sportspack ones, and wheels, so won't go mad on good tyres, as i'll have money to do all of this when i've paid a years insurance up front... For now, just get it running well, and through an MOT.

The 6x9's on the parcel shelf are Pioneers, which is good, should sound good enough for me, and the coxials (or tweeters? the blue ones in the dash anyway) are Kenwoods, so nothing extra cheap and awful :P

Also discovered today, have a front disc conversion, but disks need a clean, and maybe some pads before MOT. Good, as it's a 1275, and would have wanted to get a pair on the front anyway. Fingers crossed the rears are Minifins too, as I want them, but can't afford them :)

Anyway, a very positive day :) - some bits to buy, and some surface rust to sort, mainly under the front windscreen, and some damp in the boot, and a dirty interior, but for £685, so far, i'm well chuffed!

A few pictures also, didn't take many, very busy, and lots of running about to shops, but I have a few from when I shut up shop. Excuse the bad pictures, was dark.

Dirty engine bay!

Nasty surface rust under front windscreen. Will sort in the new year when on the road, when insured and MOT'd, and replace front windscreen seal, looking old.

Posted Image
Damp under spare wheel?

Posted Image
New battery. Halfrauds one. Will do.

Posted Image
Been saying there was surface rust under rear windscreen, but I was mistaken. On closer inspection, all I can find is this, on the left of the windscreen. Will sort in the new year though when insured and MOT'd.

Posted Image
My light assembly. MK3 right? Important, as i'm looking to get some new lenses, even if I can get the blue off the clear ones, i'm not keen on clear, but better than blue.

Also found wiring in place for spots today, good, as I want to have non-equidistant spots thin dish/depth spots on the grill, non-equidistant like sportspack Mini's.

Anyway, happy :P

If anyone has any of the parts I said I needed (especially important for getting on the road, ignition leads, lenses, lens screws, lens seals, air filter, oil filter, choke cable, and throttle cable) laying about, please let me know, i'm skint, and need to save any money if I can get some cheap parts. Really need these bits to get an MOT and get on the road in January, not a problem, but also need tyres, and can't afford them, so if I can save some money on these vital bits, please let me know!

Matt

Hopefully i'll find Mini fins on the back, if the front has disks.

Maybe i'll also find Hi-Lo's! :xxx:

Is anyone following my project?

Just in case, i've planned that next time i'm down the workshop Lucky will be going up on axle stands... All wheels off, new tyres, front discs will have a clean up and check over, pads will be checked, rear drums will be serviced, cleaned and maybe have the shoes replacing, we'll see. I'll also have a look under there and see if I can find anything nasty that my friend didn't spot when we went to see it.

Late this week i'll be ordering my choke cable, throttle cable, rear lens gaskets, and maybe some rear lenses... I really want the MK3's with reversing light, but reddy/orange tint over it, rather than white. Seen a guy with them on the forum somewhere, on a Clubman IIRC. Any help?

I'll also be getting a new air filter and set of ignition leads in the next two weeks. Might have a go at painting the back of my mirrors soon too. Also an oil change and new oil filter, probably after getting the brakes all check out and ready for the MOT.

Then once we're all done, and he's fit for an MOT, i'll be able to spend some time cleaning him... Mainly interior and body work for now, might clean a few engine bay bits, but i'll probably do that outside my house when i'm on the road, and he's back at my house :-

Then in the new year when insurance is paid, new wheels, surface rust fixed, new arches, bumpers, 4 spots, little sub, adjustable suspension maybe, and the rest of the stuff I wanted to do from my first post in this thread, little things like halogen lamps, interior repairs, new rocker cover, T-Bars, petrol cap etc. :proud:

Hopefully going to replace the air filter, change the oil (and filter), service the brakes, clean up the front disks, and any other odd jobs this Saturday. Can't wait! Hopefully we'll have enough time to do it all... Never have long in the workshop.

Really wanting to try cleaning the interior up too, but with limited workshop time, i'll leave this until it's on the road, and always outside my house I think. if it cleans up, i'll keep it, but if the white/cream cloth in the seats doesn't clean up, then I reckon i'll visit an old family friend who is a seamstress, and does great work, and see if she can recover my seats, as they're nice, retro, comfy, and not too big, but supportive. I'm sure she'd do a grand job, and i'd be able to stay the weekend and see her son, my best mate really who I rarely get to see - and he can see my carrrr >_< - we've both been car obsessed for YEARS!

I really hope not! I hadn't really thought about it to be honest! :(

Do you think I should sand it back, or at least crack the flakey paint off, have a look, and paint some rust killer on it, then spray it for now, until I can do a better job, if there is no hole? It's stored in a damp-ish non-heated garage, so it would need spraying over with a can until I can sort it out early in the new year.

A bit concerned about sorting it out properly myself when the time comes in a few weeks... Would be fine if it wasn't metallic paint, i'd be able to make a very good DIY job with the compressor and a spray gun attachment.

I hate to knock the wind out of your sails, but that looks like a 998 (or at least a small bore) engine to me, not a 1275. The angle of the the thermostat housing and the heater tap look wrong for a 1275 head.
Does the block have tappet chest covers on the back - 2 rectangular covers about 4"x1.5" held on by a bolt in their centre?

I'll have to check that on Saturday.

I really hope it's a 1275, it's a 1275 on the log book, so i'll have to pay 1275 insurance!

Any other opinions? :(

...and if it's a 998 I won't be able to wipe that smile off of my mate with the 7k 1.3 diesel corsa!

Is there an engine number on the engine? Just below the thermostate housing, stamped into the top surface of the block.

If you have a picture of the engine more straight on from the front it will help identify just where the thermostat housing points.

You would only insure it as a 998 if that is what it is - send the V5 off to be amended if you want, but the insurance won't look at it anyway.

I'm sure that if it is a 998, with a few cheap tweaks, set up right, you'll definately be able to wipe the smile of a 1.3 diesel corse drivers face!

My fairly bog standard 1098 (just has an lcb and inch and a half carb really) will smoke my mates 1.9 diesel 306 every single time, no messing! :withstupid: :)

Righto. Been in the workshop today, finally! Serviced the brakes all round. Well, sort of learnt alot, poked about, cleaned and adjusted a few bits, and got a list of parts!

Got all the wheels off, and he's now resting on stands, and ramps...

Rear drums are in great nick, as are the shoes. Spacered, but not finned unfortunately. Master cylinders look pretty new, and no leaks  - Cleaned them up a bit... Didn't go the whole hog and wire brush and spray the drums. Think i'll do it when on the road.

Adjusted the handbrake so it now works too. Cable was sticking a bit, so packed grease into the mechanism thingy on the cable under the car near the back, where the single cable splits into two, and adjusted the brakes with the square nutted thingy going through the back plate, it's name escapes me. One of them was really hard to get off though, especially without rounding off the square on the back, and causing alot of extra work. Eased it back and forth for a while, until it loosened up enough to get it out, and copper-slip grease it, before putting it back in and adjusting. The other was ok though, moved very freely?!

Found two holes in the arch on the drivers side at the rear, i'll post pictures later. Very small. Found it while cleaning road dirt off... Rust finding pry bar found it while using it to scrape. Cleaned the whole arch, and wire brushed it all, got all the flakey paint off, and put a coat of underseal on it after plating the two holes up. No pictures of the welding, as A) it sucked, and B) I was busy at the front. I need to learn to weld though, and my mum's boyfriend needs more practice!

At the front, pretty sure we have 8.4 inch discs... Took the caliper off on one side, AP callipers, single pots. Pads are alright, but the discs are thin. Big ridge at the edge, very worn. So will have to replace both. Gonna be expensive, but needs doing! Not sure if it's metro/aftermarket though. Important, as I need to know which discs to buy, and especially pads-wise.

Ones from Moss after just arriving home and looking in the catalogue, only Moss so far, KAD/Metro discs are £30 ex. vat. Minspares have 8.4's without the hubs for £80 inc VAT for the pair, vented and drilled, niiiice. If my drive flanges fit, great, otherwise they'd be £120 for the pair all in with flanges and the discs... bit rich.

Also need new drive shaft rubber gaiters, bigggg split in drivers side one! The ones the gearbox side are very good though. Also thinking the upper bushes may need replacing, so might do that too while there, save an unexpected MOT failure.

Rubber cones are both good at the back too which is cool. Rear subframe is a little flakey in places, not bad enough to be an MOT failure we don't think though. Didn't spot it when we viewed it, right under the rear seat at the back of the subframe, near the backbox. Will need replacing at some point, so got my eye out for a tidy rear subframe. If I can get one cheap, sand any tiny surface rust back, and Hammerite it, and have a few years good motoring, then thats perfect. Will probably be changed mid/late next year.

Engine wise, didn't get to check anything. Went to see your post Graeme on my phone, and it went flat, so not sure about the tappet chest covers... Forgot what you said and had to check, but then it died!

Anyway, will check next time!

Still need to buy a choke cable, throttle cable, oil filter, and air filter. Now drive shaft gaiters, discs, and pads too! Spending the money on applying for the Provisional license has been the priority at the moment.

A few pictures to come later :)

Matt

Coming along nicely. I had a bit of rust like that bit under your window on my drivers side wing. That turned out to be a hole. Your best just to sand it back and find out how bad it is. Then just filler it up and spray it.
