Hello

just fitted a supercharger to my mini based blitz buggy and it's great, awesome acceleration! great sound from the exhaust, a bit of torque steer and a great big grin on my face.

I'm running a 1380 engine with sw5 cam, ported head, 8.5 comp via decompression plate, std box with x-pin diff, megajolt ignition and 1 3/4 su with ram pipe.
I'm getting around 11psi on full throttle.

BUT where is the cool whining sound?

i've listed to other supercharged mini engines on youtube and they sound great!

please advise, should i be pleased or am i missing something?
do all superchargers whine or just some and why?

I thought they all did.

mine only tends to do it under load i.e. accelerating 3-7K RPM

That looks like a good install with a nice short intake pipe to the charger.

Theres abit of confusion with some of the vids on youtube. Theres a video which says the car is supercharged, but really its just got straight cut drop gears fitted.

Its the dropgears that make a loud whine, not the charger.

every car ive ever known to ave a supercharger has that whine, a few i have seen are pretty much not there untill they are revved

i love the supercharger whine, so if i fitted one to my car i would be really dissapointed to be honest

its not just straight cut gears that the whine comes from

I wonder if the above joking is in fact the answer. what I mean is because of the location of the engine it's just not audible from the driving seat. Try getting someone else to accelerate past you and see what it sounds like.

Jameswildcooper's charged clubman was the same, you couldn't hear the charger. He was running around 10psi. Some minis I've heard at shows that are blow through charged really whine, even when stationary and revving it.

the whine comes from the toothed drive belt, try tightening it up,
as said you may only be able to hear it from the outside...

Are you sure? They are v belt driven, not toothed belt like cambelts. I've always thought it was the vanes inside making the noise.

The comment was was a 50/50 punn and some truth...

OK I know you're not going at the speed of sound, but as you're going forward the sound waves from what's behind you are getting lengthened because the medium ( the air ) in which the sound uses to travel is moving in the opposite direction, and your relative position to where the sound was produced is changing. This would lower the pitch ( maybe not by much but maybe enough )

Also in a buggy you're going to have a lot more wind and ambient noise coming at you than in a sealed cabin which is also blocking out some of the nose from behind... I'm sure that if you had a radio you're going to hear squat until you turn it right up..

I'll no wait for the

Oh no it isn't

Surely it's nothing to do with the toothed belt drive. If it was every car with belt driven camshafts would whine, and they don't.

Also, just to poo poo the ideas further, SCs run directly off the crankshaft ala Bently Blower still whine.

Maybe knackerd ones don't whine, because of worn seals or something, I'm just speculating.
