Just wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the Synthetic Enamel like Jawel Sell? Kinda like the idea of giving a good few couats of filler primer then smoothing down to give a better finish.

Why cant you use car paint!!!

Why don't you take pity on him and paint it for him????

I saw this thread the other day, and thought wow, I might have a go at doing that. Then I decided, that I wouldn't cut corners and I'd get it done professionally. So, today I went out to get a few quotes and the first place I went to said I'd need new scuttle panel, two new doors, two new wings, and new sills; they gave me a quote for the work, and a full respray of 2500.

Urrrrgh, don't think so! So I'm back to the drawing board; I'm going to weld, fill, sand and roller paint myself. I did it with a a year ago with an old motorbike, so presumably I can do it now, just on a bigger scale.

I'm still unsure where about to source the paint though?, and the colour; (Presumably rustoleum don't make bespoke colours, and I'll have to pick a rustoleum shade of red?).

The other quick thing I've been wondering is where abouts is best to do this. I've somewhere off the road I can do it; my only concerns, are 1. It's outside, and 2. Theres usually a car parked within 10mtrs or so).

Question! just a small one out of interest

I dont belive any one has asked this yet and its not for me just wouldent want any ones bodys/paint spoilt.

Do the roll on paints mentioned here react with certan paints that could be already on the car?

as i know some have said hammertie has reacted with there paint in the past.

hi, Have read through the thread and decided when i paint my project this will be the way i will do it.
was looking through ebay and found a link to a paint company called re-paint ace.
Has anybody had any experience with this company?
Looks quite good to me. Have to primer though.

I have tried this paint before and I found it far too thick to brush or roller on. It is brilliant for the subframes and other suspension parts though.

You have to thin the paint to paint it with rollers

take a look at this site

you say you rubbed down to etch primer.
does this mean that all the body work was sound first. if so did you replace panels previous to etch primer.
i would like to do this but i know if i rubbed down there wouldnt be much metal to paint on.

was it hard on the delicate places like where the arches met the bodywork. did you have a special roller, like a V one or anything

and also is there any special technique or is it just like wall painting

and did you apply any thing to make it shinier other than wet and dry and t cut?

cheers

You need to make sure you have sound body work. Any major rust should be cut out and replaced with good metal. Surface rust just need cleaning, before applying Rustolem. As for the delicate places, use a foam brush (you can get a set of 3 different sized from Art shops).

There is a lot information on here for roller painting. You may want to try and spray paint it with something like Earlex 3000 (an HVLP gun), the important part to remember are:

1. Mix 2 part paint to 1 part thinner.
2. Paint, not spending too much time on one panel, only go over the area if you have missed something or have got thick lines.
3. Leave to dry for 2-3 days (if hot) or longer for colder days. Remember you can drive the car after about 6 hours anyway.
4. Flatten with fine wet & dry.
5. Panel wipe.
6. Paint again.

You will need around 4 coats to get a good covering.

You can see the results on my project page (link here) on post 22 and you can see how clean it comes out.

Just wanted to make a point regarding Coachpainting as thats what this is be it using Rustoleum,Tekoloid or any other brand its basically Coachpainting :xxx:

I think theres some really good results here but i keep seeing people say "why dont you just use car paints?"

For a starter with all the equipment you need and the cost of 2pack or celulose per litre you could get over twice as much coachpaint for the same price or less :xxx:

Yes you can brush on Celulose or 2pack but it leaves far more brush marks in it and tends not to flow as well when brushed or rollered :xxx:

Comming back to the price before any sprayers jump on me,having your car proffesionally sprayed costs too much if your on a limited budget :xxx:

Now im not saying they charge too much because i know its time consuming and they have to make a living but whichever way you dress it up if you only have a budget of a couple of hundred theres no way any bodyshop can respray your car for that because the paint it most likely to cost that before you start :xxx:

So if you only have a very small budget and plenty of time on your hands you can most probably coachpaint a Mini for between £100-200 yourself depending on prices of paint, brushes etc from your local stockists :xxx:

Coachpaint also doesnt smell anywhere near as bad as Celulose or 2Pack :xxx:

Bare in mind until sprayable paint came along all vehicles were coachpainted and i believe many handbuilt car companys carried on coachpaint long after most mass produced cars were sprayed :xxx:

General Rule is you can paint enamel based paint over most other paints like 2pack,celulose etc but not the other way around :xxx:

I think it may be because enamel based paint takes forever to cure properly so under the surface its probably still soft whereas the car paints like celly and 2k cure quickly?

not certain just my theory :xxx:

Signwriters use Enamel over celly and 2k so it doesnt react that way just never do it the tother way around :)

If we were living in the 60,s-70,s most getting there first cars would get a can of coach enamel to stamp their mark on it and Finnigans who make Hammerite used to do something called RE-PAINT i had an ancient car mechanics mag once where they painted a staff car in it and it came out as good as a Sprayjob :xxx:

All in all if you can afford a proper spray go for it if not have a go coachpainting, better to do it cheap and keep a classic on the road rarther than it get worse and have to me scrapped huh? :xxx:

Jodie :xxx:
