all this info is already on this site

many people have now rollered their car and if you look in the projects section you will find the build threads

Rustoleum combi colour

you don't need a primer but you will have to key the surface

i'm using about 60% paint and 40% white spirit

in between coats i just give it a light sand just to remove the shine (don't try and make it smooth yet)

I would say use etch primer of you are taking it right back to the bare metal, need about 6-8 rattle cans for full coverage.
Between coats I sanded/rubbed down any imperfections e.g. Runs, hairs, bubbles, then softly rubbed down the surroundin area,(i used 400-600 grade sandpaper, smooth enough not to damage but rough enough to flatten/smooth body surface) then started rollering the next coat. The 2nd and 3rd coats are thinner than the 1st tho,as that prevents bubbles. Pretty much jus keep rollering until you are happy wit the finish. But have to leave overnight between coats.

The paint i used can be rollered right out the tin, no thinning needed so i cant say about thinning ratio's
Hope that helps mate

Looks really good, fair play :(

However, in the first photo, isnt that rust? left hand corner of the bumper lip??

Thanks,
Aye, it is just surface rust on the bumper lip

Just keep an eye on that corner if you didnt take it back to bare metal. Could get out of hand quickly if any road salt or water gets inbetween the bumper seam!

I started mine ages ago but I can only do a bit at a time because of using it everyday. I will have to post some pictures up when it is finished. I am using Rustoleum and white spirits.

im so glad i read this article, i was just about ready to take my little beast for a respray but have now decided im going to do it myself. for the cost of paint and an orbital sander its gota be worth having a go!! i have been on the rustoleum uk website, 2.5L of combi paint for around £25 >_< the only concern i have is the front end of my mini is carbon fibre, will this be a problem using this specific type of metal paint? :) as im only sanding down to the priimer i would imagine it will be okay, but i would rather get some advice before i make a mess of it!!!! many thanks.

Fantastic job and looks fantastic, Im in two minds as to use rustroleum OR Jawel Paints Synthetic enamel Truck paint, reason being I can get Rustrolem 2.5lrt for £28 + postage, however JAWEL (google) do 5ltr of Synthetic Enamel, 5ltr of Filler primer and 5 Ltr of thinners for around the £70 mark.

Just wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the Synthetic Enamel like Jawel Sell? Kinda like the idea of giving a good few couats of filler primer then smoothing down to give a better finish.

I will be spraying not rollering.

Cheers

BM
