Personal opinion would be go down the NAS route and stay clear of turbo's unless you do an extensive build to make it strong and reliable.

The bottom end build is actually cheaper than a high revving 1380. Nothing special needed really chap. Turbo pistons, centre main strap optional, rebuild properly with OE quality parts. It's a myth that they need much strengthening. They turn lower RPM than NA.

You can get up to 110 bhp with the NA 1380 and an SW5 cam. 286's are 20 year old technology now.

I hope I am being civil, just my opinions

Jumping on the nitrous bittie - definately a great power booster. Stick 50horse of gas on a moderate-to-hot 1380, and you'll be smiling all day long. Sod 1380's or Turbo's, hp4£ don't come any cheaper than giggle gas

Not only transferring that power from the crank but also putting it on the road with reliability..

Yes there is every chance of getting 120 bhp out of a 1380, but it's going to cost.. most 1380's builds using more common equipement will developaround the 90 hp mark..

Only when you start employing the likes wedged/bladed cranks, omega pistons, lightened balanced rods, ultralight flywheel, vernier timing etc... are you going to get into the 100's and even then you'll need a high flow head ( stage 4/5 ) and a SCCR box and drops to transfer the power..

Yup, you could do 120 out of a 1380, have you got the 2.5K to build the engine ?

Also being local, I'm aware of Jonspeed, but also look at some of the other local A series engine builders like MED, and Morspeed.

Happy hunting :cheese:

The cams coming out of Australia courtesy of Graham Russel are what i'd be looking into - they seem to be offering much more than the 15+year old designs from piper and Kent.
There is quite a bit of chatter on http://www.minimania.../msgthreads.cfm
about them... Setup a user ID, and do a search.

the reason i went to jonspeed is because i cant fit the engine myself and morspeed dont do that. i think i'll get the 1380 and then go down the vmax supercharger route in about 18 months time

I can't comment on the price as Bill Richards prices are definitely at the more expensive range of the scale, but to put things in comparison, my 1425, is about as high a spec as you want/can go for a engine that will still be decent on the road. With the HIF44 carb on it was making *just* under 100bhp at the wheels, with the 45 DCOE webber on that might have just been pushing 15-120. I didn't buy the engine directly, but Bill has told me its a 5 figure engine.

Well, a stage 2 head, and single 1 3/4HIF carb are not going to release 120 horses - not unless you visit the MITP portable RollingRoad that is...

More like 95, 100 absolute tops on a good day

Have a flick through some mini mangazines at RR shootouts and you'll identify folks occssionally running 'all the bits' engines. Compare the outputs compared to the outputs of supposedly stock engines (as a baseline) and see how many 'all the bits' motors make almost double the power of a stock 1275.
Not many.

Mind you - if he builds you a good strong 1380 - no matter what the power - that you're happy with, for a price you like, then ignore the power claims, and just accept you've got a known combination that will do what any equivalent engine would. Then get giddy with the laughing gas!

(figures are flywheel figures).

i wanted a turbo originally but i might just stick with mods after talking to people who have gone down both tracks. although i really wanted the boost and all that goes with turbo, i also want to be able to have a dinner on my table. so im going to get a nice fairly rust free mini and go from there.
