Always best to research any fish you get as they all have different requirements, some shops dont seem too bothered what they sell you.
For your size tank avoid getting anything thats gonna get big, such as some plecs, there not that good at keeping the algea down(best way is avoid direct sunlight and dont leave the light on unnecessary).
My plec was about 3" when i got him.2yrs later hes 14"! so had to get a much larger tank 140l up to 350l and much larger external filters.
If you want an easy community setup, get some tetras, corries, hatchets and some small loaches.
but always research as much as poss before buying.
Fighters are entertaining and quite friendly(i.e feeding out you hand),but they dont like fast flowing water so no powerhead type filters(a spray bar is ideal),also avoid tetras that are quite nippy with a fighter(neons, glowlights, cardinals will be fine).

Fighters in the same Tank and a Gravel Feeder for a while in a Large Hex Tank on the stand they all got on well no fights. They are such pretty fish.

Looks like a great first tank mate :)

I've had my tank about 5yrs ish now - couple of plecs, umpteen platy's, couple of opal gourami and a few of khuli (coolie) loaches :P

But i'm more into herps (amphibs and reptiles) with an axolotl in my room! He's the coolest thing in the world :dontgetit: and if it wasn't for uni in September i'd have a crested gecko :P Though rule dependant i might get a little tank for a S.fighter and a couple tetra's or so at uni

if you want the best clean up crew and algae control get your selfs some shrimp, i have about 50 cherry shrimp in my tank and it only gets the odd bit of tough algae on the glass and thats it, ps don't add shrimp till the tank is well cycled

i had a fire eel in my tank, good community fish, and i even managed to train it to eat bloodworm out of my hand, i had to take it back to the petshop sadly, it got too big for my tank, it was only about 6 inches when i got it, and it grew to 2foot.

My favourite fish has got to be khuli loach, google them, their the coolest fish! I have a swarm of nearly 20, lol.
Ive also got 15 african dwarf frogs, and 2 zebra plecos.

I got a load of rocks from the beach, and boiled them in a sauce pan to clean them, then using some special aquatic glue, glued them together to make little rock caves, and covered them in java moss, i did have some bogwood, but that started to go mouldy and grow poisonous algae.

Just some constructive criticism. Your aquascaping looks brilliant so far, i love the gravel, and the layout of your plants is brilliant. But what lighting are you using? It seems kind of gloomy and dark in there? It's amazing how much better a £20 lighting kit can make a tank look! I'd consider that essential.

good lighting will help the plants to look their best, as well as enhance the colours in the fish, i have two light tubes for my tank, one tube for the plants and one for the fish, if you know what i mean....

You need an air pump and bubbly fizzy stone, if you havent already got one, as this will oxygenate the water for the fish, so they dont choke on water...

Yeah, definitly essential for good plant growth, or most species plant survival.

We have the hugest ACF At work Sam... he fits into the palm of my hand. He was seized from the owner 2 years ago because they fed him on a diet of pork and sausages... he seems happy enough now though. Im considering homing him myself, but in a seperate tank to my other ones because he'd gobble them up :w00t: How are yours doing?
