With regards to mobiles, I was out of the country for over 2 years, kept my o2 sim as I liked the number (easy to remember.) Wacked it in my mobile when I was back and it worked fine. Still had £1.36 credit on there. . . and have been using it everyday for over a year now.

if someone wants something that bad they will get it and there will be no stopping it.

This is very true, but then not every car crime is committed by a determined proffesional master criminal. Any anti theft device (be it a professional installation or an amateur DIY creation) might just be enough to deter or slow down an opportunist. The beauty with DIY jobbies is that they are often individual creations that do not follow a recognised pattern of installment like the proffesional installations do, it can therefore take a significant amount of time for a "would be" thief to work out how the car has been immobilsed and where, which might just be enough for them to abandon the theft and move on. (particularly if the car is not particularly valuable in the first place!)

Whilst it is also can be true that criminals are not stupid, it is also the case that some of them clearly are. I suffered a botched car break in where the master criminal involved removed the drivers door lock completely, destroyed the door handle and latch mechanism, as well making a number of holes in the door skin and still failed to get into the car even though I had actually left the passenger door unlocked! On a separate occasion another genius failed to break into my caravan simply because they had tried to prize the door frame open with a crowbar instead of the door itself. With this in mind I would not necessarily credit the type of criminal that tries to steal a £1.5k mini, with the same level of criminal ingenuity as those that rob prestige cars worth £30k plus!!

ok everyone i got a great idea!

how about using a wireless cctv camera? you could even just place it inside your car! so while your alseep, your camera is recording!

least if your car is stolen you have some evidence!

Maplins do a few, seen this one for not a bad price. but there is alot more expensive for i guess alot better quality.

Va3XLkJ5GDw or THAT scene from american history X :)

I know someone who used to WANT their car to get stolen, she used to leave the car door open and keys in the ignition with the engine running whilst going shopping for half hour. Never got nicked though.

Criminals will pinch what ever they fancy and will stop at nothing in order to get it, you can only stop the opertunitist thief. I find getting to know most of the dodgy people in the area helps to keep things safe

Why would you steal a mini ? Because you have a V5 and tags for a scrapper that would take years and £000000's to restore ?

Which is why I always send the link to any dodgy looking adverts on ebay etc to crime stoppers, and why tmf does not allow the sale of V5's

Found the best way to have people stop stealing my mini is for it to be in many pieces and locked in the garage!

Erm... There's a picture somewhere on the net of my mate driving along waving his steering wheel out the window :(

I know it's stupid and this by no way justifies it, but the road was quiet and the boss had holes in it so he could still steer it to some extent.

Please don't try to copy though!

i had a removable steering wheel and a home made disc lock type thing that fit over the boss when the wheel was out. the snap on boss you can get from places like halfords is easily unscrewed and a wheel screwed straight on, and the weld on race type boss can easily have another wheel clicked on, by fitting the lock/cover over the hub you couldnt do that. it never got knicked anyway!

my rs turbo got taken off my drive though, only got around the corner and couldnt get past the immobiliser. b******s!

i think the best security is the mechanical type, everyone but you ignores alarms! wheel clamps, steering locks etc work best, unless your dealing with pros that is.

i have heard of cars being stolen by dodgy employees at garages, you give them your keys (they get a replica made on lunch break) you fill in a form for their records about your car, your name and address all on it (they know where to come to get it) heypresto your mini is gone!

im sure you all know about thieves breaking into your car, getting your sat nav and pressing "home" and taking your other car out the garage too

if they want it, they will take it, and the more anti theft things you fit to the car .

it could just end up with them getting annoyed of and smashing the car up.

thats what id do if i kept getting stopped by battery cut of and fuel cut ofs and steering locks
