Well- most folk who do a new sheel build start by stripping the old shell bare - get rid of it - and then get the new shell in and do the rebuild. Unless lucky enough to have a double garage and room to do a side-by-side swap over. I certainly did mine the first way. So - in this case - there's just a slight time-lag until the new shell appears when funds allow... ?
Sounds about right : only this has added complication
And in this case the seller, ran out of funds and sold it as a project. This is where the fine line would appear to be. So THE BUYER now has a pile of parts of which ONE can definately be traced to the orignal identity (via the engine number). As long as he has all the parts and nothing significant missing then he's okay.
Most of the other parts have date codes, and some will have serial numbers, but these were never linked to a chassis number. So that's irrelevant. He just needs everything ? What if he doesn't want to use the copper interior, or wants to sell it to fund the project ? What if he wants to use the engine in one car whilst he builds the other?
but what would happen if during the rebuild into the new shell, that the engine was deemed unfit for human consumption ?
I digress, we've gone way off topic.
Can I go more off topic.
Given that most things are interchangable, does it matter whats on the V5 ? I've got a 998 1988 Mayfair, I'd like a 1340 clubman, would it matter to anyone MORALLY if I swapped enough bits over to have my dream ?

Without going too far off topic..... with the identifying panel being the scuttle and the scuttle being one of the more frequently replaced panels on a mini, is the shells identity not lost when the scuttle is replaced? or are you supposed to somehow transfer the details across onto the new scuttle?
So does anybody know? It's just that I'm planning to replace my rather rusty scuttle in the near future & am unsure what I am supposed to do about the vehicles identity if I loose the original scuttle panel!! After all, what is there to stop me being wrongly accused of having done an illegal re-shell, if my original shells identity has been removed?
