I’ve spotted this posted on another forum but it’s worth reading.

http://www.guardian....eaten-blockades

Apparently crude oil is expected to reach $100 per barrel so prices will go up again. BUT wait a minute, crude prices have been as high as $140 a barrel and we have never paid as much for fuel as we do now!
Remember back in the dark days of 2000 when we had the last real fuel protests, where farmers and truckers blockaded oil refineries? Well at that time they were complaining that the price of fuel had increased to "a massive 80.6p for unleaded and 85.1p for diesel"!!! What has happened since?

Well the price of fuel is now around £1.27 for unleaded and £1.32 for derv but these are average prices.

So providing I’ve worked this out right going from the above.

To fill a 7.5 gallon mini fuel tank back in 2000 it would cost a total of £27.22 at 0.80p; to fill the same tank today would be £43.20 at 1.27p. That’s £15.98 more, that’s over half a tank back in 2000 prices!!

And it’s set to rise even higher!!!

Most I could get in my first mini in 1982 was £7.50

It costs £88 last week to fill the Passat with diesel !! (driven carefully though that will give me over 900mls)

From the BBC yesterday:

" The Conservatives promised to look into a "fair fuel stabiliser" in their manifesto and Mr Cameron said last week that he was considering ways to help cash-strapped motorists.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says the UK now has the second highest diesel price in Europe - something which it says is causing great difficulties for hauliers and other businesses dependent on road transport.

The organisation also points out that on the continent, the total price is split about 50/50 between the cost of the fuel itself and tax.

But in the UK, the average product price is 38% of the total, with the remaining 62% coming from tax."

I filled up yesterday at our local BP at a rate of 130.9 pence a litre. :(

What I fail to understand is the difference in price between petrol & diesel, 12 months ago diesel was around 10p per litre more expensive than unleaded. Over the summer the price difference dropped to the point where both fuels were around the same price & now we are back to a difference of almost 10 pence per litre again!! As both products are refined from the same crude oil why the fluctuating price difference? Surely diesel is more expensive to produce than unleaded, or it isn't?? :(

Not bad enough that VAT's gone up, but fuel duty at the same time.
Sickening that fuel companies continually boast about record profits.

Tax and duty changes cause the difference. Duty on Diesel was frozen for a while I believe. Why do you assume Diesel is more expensive to refine? It's a far lower grade product that unleaded before the additives are introduced. That's the whole point of it.

Honestly isn't it time we stopped complaining about oil and fuel prices. I mean compared to most whole sale products its cheap per litre and compared to its effects its a moral nightmare.

Anyone honestly not expect this to happen? Hands up. developing countries have big stakes in oil now, we had our fun, we all live in cushy lives so their demand will strain outdone but if anything they're entitled to it.

Oil companies do develop future fuels and its a big part of their budget, so forget this 'blame them' mannerism.

Fuel and oil will go up even more, will run out, deal with the effects of it.

No one seriously thought petrol would drop to below a pound, and even if it does, that it would stay there.

Or am I being unkind to the people who need cheap fuel to survive their lifestyle?

Also that quote is two years old, so lets not hold our breath shall we.

im not worried bout this for the running of my mini because lets face it its not that expensive to fill your tank.

My daily driver is close on £90 to fill and i can eat that fuel in a week.

I am on the "I have no choice bench" I can keep my mini in the garage but i still have to do my job and that requires a car. Plenty of you out there can swap from your car to pubic transport (Freudian slip!!).

the torries dont mind the duty on petrol and the resulting prices for motorists, they brought the scheme in IIRC.

for every 1p rise in petrol the government makes an extra £500 million pounds.
the sky is the limit unfortunately.

£1.29.9 for Derv here.

but its cheap around Edinburgh. I seen it more expensive than that just before the snow hit and pushed it up even further.
