The threads are already there on the 998 one, just the large hole needs drilling out.

I think youd probably get away with a cam with a bit more lift if you want it, with the extra cc's you shouldnt have as much of a lumpy idle as you would with a 998cc and the extra lift will give you some more ponies (plus you wouldnt see much benefit from your 12g940 without it). However if its a daily driver I would stick to the sw5, nice and torquey and less strain is put on the valvetrain. I have a kent 276 cam in my 998 with a 12g295 fully worked head amongst other things, really goes when its on cam. >_<

Your talking sense :) The sw5 is a nice cam but thats all. its a nice cam not a lairy cam :) itll be good for motorway pulling but a 276 would be better for a street runner performance.

Engine spec sounds nice mate what carb setup are you running and whats been done to your head?

Still it wouldn’t be too hard to drill and tap out some holes though.

Get hold of the required breather and gasket. Then both use the gasket as a guide to drill and tap the holes or see if martin will do then or something.

I should know this as I’ve just stuck one in my 998 with a 12g940 head. >_<

From what I’ve got…

Sw5, mild road, 244 inlet / 244 exhaust, power band 1000-6000
Mg metro, fast road, 252 inlet / 268 exhaust, power band 1500-6500

That’s providing it’s a genuine metro cam and not some other standard crap cam being passed off as one.

Ill Drill and tap it myself :)

and Hmm Sw5 or metro cam :)

to be honest the metro cam looks hell of a lot like my old one

its out a rover metro

If you look at the timing chain end of the cam, there should be a 1/4" groove machined into the cam between nos.1 and 2 lobes before the lobe for the fuel pump.

and i need to crack on with this engine

Pretty much.

If the bores are worn past needing just a hone and new rings, then it would have to be re-bored and new oversized pistons used. (get the pistons first though)

yeah thats right. The sw5 is a low end mild road cam wheras the MG metro cam is a low end fast road cam which will be pleanty in a 998. the 276 is still better but the lift on a MG Metro cam is pretty poor. it only lifts to 2.5on both whereas the sw5 lifts to 2.8 on both and the 276 lifts to 2.93in and 3.15ex
If its only a rover metro cam not an mg metro cam its only a std road cam and lifts to 2.5 like the MG one but power usage from 1000-5800 and the overlap is abysmall and the overall valve lift gets worse as it goes on.

to be honest overall if you want a good motorway puller get the sw5 if you want something abit more "racey" then get the 276 which will give you a small bore rocket ship when combined with a new head, carb, manifold etc.

If rebuilding get new pistons then send it off to be rebored and with new rings etc. much better and you know whats been done to it.
