The Germans wouldn't build it today.

I don't think it's totally stupid though, the MoD & Forestry Commission have some tracks that could be a nice little earner if opened up to the rally 'n 4x4 enthusiasts.

Actually, building a race track of that magnitude would create some jobs etc, even for a short time. Although this is said a little tongue in cheek, I do believe the UK could help improve things with a big increase in manual labour. There are far too many lazy people that are happy to sit behind a desk doing crappy paperwork but wouldn't want to do anything manual. I'm sure there are many manual labour jobs that could be done to help reduce unemployment. And on top of this, if you are getting paid jobseeker's allowance, or lazy bum allowance (not everyone, but a lot) then I think you should have to give something back. There are going to be plenty of airports and other places that need snow cleared this winter. Too many sodding people want something for nothing. But that's an off topic rant, sorry.

However, part of the appeal of the Ring is that you have to travel to get there, and its an adventure. Plus health and safety wouldn't let you run it in the same way. Not to mention the insurance issues.

I do love the Ring.

Here, let me fix that for you...

There are many people that are happy to sit behind a desk working hard, to earn a living, but wouldn't want to do anything manual because they have skills far more beneficial else where

That's a fair point, and I do apologise for appearing to group everyone together.

The rant is more an annoyance at people that don't have work and refuse to get a job doing manual labour becasue its beneath them, or look down on people that have such a job. Manual labour is better than no job at all.

And I'm sat in an office at a desk right now. Clearly not working hard though. >.<

You can't built racetracks like the Nurburgring anymore. a modern track is much safer, much wider than the old 1927 track. The only way this would happen is by a super rich private individual. Governement wouldn't replicate something that causes one big accident a day, and kills one tourist a year.

Plus, if it were to be a 2nd Nurburgring, it should not be in Europe, you already have one that is waaay closer than me!

An economy does have to produce more than paperwork though. If we didn't produce anything our wealth would eventually trickle away to those that do. That's if the bankers don't gamble it away first.

I don't think our health 'n safety will be any worse than the Germans', but all that expense 'n hardcore could be put to better use for our economy.

I seem to remember another famous german using building roads as a method of beating recession!?!

Worked for him, get the unemployed employed and motivated.

Its a valid way of helping with the recession.

Why not petition to have more world rally over here?

That would be easier than building a fully fledged race course, you would only need to use the roads already there

unfortunatly its the MSA who will try all out to kill that effort!

plus no track would ever be built because the moaning people. Already, your already restricted hours you can run, long standing tracks like donnington etc cant run all the time and even tho the tracks been there far longer than their houses or sometimes even there lifes they demand there quiet little hovvle stays that way

Much as the child in me would like it, it's just not feasible or realistic.

There's enough racing happening in the high street anyway, just turn them into a toll race track.

*********Disclaimer*******
Before the fun police come along and hoover all the morale in the world I am of course joking. We don't want another toll road.

I shall be watching the parliament channel with interest to see if it comes up, good luck in your crusade though, we all know god loves a tryer during a recession but I'm not sure if he loves apexes :-

We are one of the few countries which does not allow road closures for motor sport. If we could achieve that a lot more top-level rallies and hill-climbs could be held with affordable costs for competitors. Apparently the problem is that it's not possible to remove the statutiry speed limits on a temporary basis.
What we should be petitioning for is the sort of road closure orders that they have in France, Belgium, Ireland and Italy, etc.
