My favourite Mini activity is building engines. I'll do most things, although I hate gearboxes, but the building of the engine is great, especially when you start a re-built one for the first time.
I one helped a guy with an 850 re-build. Answered all his questions, we put in the crank, rods, pistons, cam, timing gears, etc. He then fitted it to the 'box and put it in the car. Connected it all up, then asked me to come over and check out the installation. It all looked good, I timed the dizzy then he asked me to start it. I got the oil pressure up, then fired it up. It ran very nicely. Then he asked me to drive it a bit, so I put it in reverse and let the clutch up. Nothing, nothing happened. So I asked him where the piece left over was. He looked around and found the transfer gear! (yes, really!). I helped him pull it to pieces, we fitted the gear, put it all back together and it went beautifully.
