You need to make sure there is lead going from the engine to the Negative on the battery,

I assume you have the circuit like this

12V from Battery, connected to Light, other side of light connected to the Oil Pressure switch.

Have you tried to earth the wire to the pressure switch on the battery Negative just to check you have good wires and a functioning bulb

So 12V from Battery, Bulb, Battery Negative

Just to test

i have the 12v sent to the starter and all the leads that should be there attached to the 12v. then jump leads to the body of the car.

i know it all works as it did before i took the engine out.

Wait I'm confused, is this your own loom or the cars loom you've managed to stretch on to the engine on the floor?

Also, how do you you know you actually had a good electrical connection? for all you know this whole thing is down to a loose connection or faulty bulb, that would be a turn up for the books

As above, test the lamp outside of its holder to make sure it works. Then confirm you have 12V going to the bulb holder and that the wire from the other side of the bulb holder has continuity from end to end. If the bulb works and your wiring is intact, test the setup by removing the wire from the oil pressure switch and holding it to earth on the engine block. If the balance of your wiring is correct the lamp should illuminate.

If you can... how about sketching your oil lamp wiring, scan it and post a picture here.

Exactly - you have had so much 'fun' with this - GET AN OIL PRESSURE GAUGE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never imagined you were relying on the switch.............

sounds like the original problem was caused by the oil pump gasket. sometimes the bolts are too long depending on the manufacture of the pump, with the bolts bottoming out before they really clamp down on the pump. This leads to the gasket blowing out when the engine is run up.

I've ran an engine un knowingly without an Oring between the block and gearbox and I had no problems with priming or oil pressure. I did use a smear of RTV on the mating faces of the block and gearbox though. what did happen was with the ball bearing, the oil pressure fluctuated at higher rpms quite dramatically with the engine under high load, and eventually killed the center main bearing
