Another quick question. Whilst fitting the diff cover back on i noticed the little sleeve that holds the ball bearing and spring in was poking out. Somehow i had managed to turn the selector shaft rod sleeve round. Anyway now ive managed to spin it round so the small spring and ball sleeve fits flush.

However now ive done that i cant turn the selector rod. I can push the selector gear back and forth but cant turn it up into the gear selectors. Is this normal? Dont want to put it all together to find ive put something in the wrong place.

Hope it all makes sense will get some pictures up if it helps :) Thanks Mike

Here are a few pics to try and explain what i mean.

So rod can move freely but sleeve sticks out.

Sleeve fits but rod will only move selector gears.

When i put the ball bearing and spring in and tried to fit the casing, it left a gap like this in the casing even with it all tourqed up. Leaving to me thinking ive done something wrong somewhere :(

Thats not normal....you need to get thet undone sharpish!! must be some dirt or something has got into the hole. Remove the spring, ball and sleave...clean everything and use an airline on the hole to blow out any guff...Has the rubber O ring seated properly? Its a bugger if you need to take the rods out. thats a gearbox apart job!! But there is nothing really that can go wrong with them..so its probobly a bit of dirt..

Wouldn't want to take it out only just built it :( will give it a proper clean out again when I get a chance and report back. The o ring is seated properly so can't be that. Thought the selector rod might be in wrong.
Cheers for the reply.

Hi bud just an idea where the gap is it looks like a blind bottom thread, have you put the correct length bolt in, the one above it looks a bit long, or is there some dirt in the hole where the bolt goes, check the length and the depth of the threaded hole against the stud

and all the best for the festive season :xmas:

Heya :) been a while! How's the engine going?
To be honest I just used the nuts that were in originally as they seemed to work fine... Been looking at bolt sets and they are cheap, enough so going to upgrade to New bolts after new year I think,:)

And a merry Christmas to you too :)

take the bolt out and chop a few mm off it and try it again, looks like the bolt is too long

Excellent news :) Looking forward to you starting it up ;) Wiring up spots is easy peasy and worth it in the end!

Managed to sort the bolt out on the cover, as it turns out it was slightly longer than all the overs... ah well done know. The selector rod is still uber stiff and cant move it up to select gears... i take it once its linked into the gear stick e.t.c it will be able to move?

Right as it turns out im going to end up being away for 4 months this sunday for work in le alps so the engine build is going to come to a rather abrupt halt. Its all bagged and tagged and stacked in the garage covered in oil to try and stop the bits going orange.

Will still be online once a week hopefully so ill be keeping an eye on your build firefox :D

Glad this was something simple for you to fix. Are they spring washers you have fitted on the bolts..mine had no washers at all...Also thet were all 11mm heads. yours look a bit different...have a nice time in LE ALPS. do you ski? dont forget to take a picture of your mini with you.
