I was a massive fan of topgear about 2 years ago but there shows and challenges have just become more stupid and fake!
The show was recently at The Great Central Railway in my town filming the "car train" episode and i saw first hand how rubbish it all is.
I never thought i would say this but I genuinely prefer Fifth Gear, it is actually a car show where they give CONSUMER advice on cars people can afford not just supercars that about 2% of people can buy and realistically drive on UK roads.

I don't watch top gear to decide what car I want to buy... I don't think I'l ever buy a brand new car.

I watch top gear because I think it's hilarious. I love the creations they come up with, and I don't care if it's all staged. They include all kinds of cars in the program, which i think is the most important thing, OK so most of us can't afford a lambo, or are going to roll over a reliant robin everytime a slight bend comes along... but it is educational AND fun!

I really enjoyed the christmas special, and I don't really care a mini got battered like that. A lot of you are saying it wasn't as good as usual, but I haven't laughed so hard in ages!

2%? i'd wager is less than 1% people can afford and drive in the UK. but meh i look at peoples cars on here and there is no way i could ever afford todo what some people have done or are doing but theres no harm in looking and enjoying. and thats what topgear about, its a laugh. its about the only half decent thing on the BBC these days apart from reruns of only fools and horses.

It's all very well people saying they liked old top gear more or like 5th Gear. Sadly most people didn't which is why Original Top Gear was cancelled and 5th Gear started.

When 5th Gear started though no one watched that either. Remember when they used to be at Ace Cafe every week with Tim Lovejoy? It was dreadful. Only now when they've copied sections of TG has it become more popular.

Luckily now we have a humorous car based programme in TG and a interesting factual prog in 5G. Lets not bastardise either of them.

There's no real comparison, 5th Gear is a motoring consumer programme, where as modern Top Gear is an entertainment show based loosely on motoring. Does anybody actually watch Top Gear with a view to buying any of the cars that they road test on there?? I dare say that even if you could afford to, you probably wouldn't be basing your decision on what Clarkson, Hammond or May think any way!! My missus watches Top Gear because she finds it funny, whereas she wouldn't dream of watching 5th Gear as it would bore the pants of her.

That said I've noticed that 5th Gear seem to have started to introduce a few Top Gear style challenges and amusing features of late, an attempt at capturing some of Top Gears audience and ratings perhaps?

Tony Mason who was a presenter on the original Top Gear was recently at a rally function and he said "I worked on Top Gear when it was about motoring. That was before it became a comedy programme". How true.

I thought it was a brilliant Christmas Special. They bought the Mini from GC Motors in Swanley just before we went there to look for our first Mini. Spoke to the owner and he told us all about it. To be honest, the car will probably end up being transported back to England and then sent to Beauliui to the Top Gear Expo..... so really it will be helping British Tourism stay alive as it will be a mueseum piece, just like the rocket Mini etc! I finally watched this last night. To be honest, the contrived predictability of the boys' antics was painful to watch & my cringing just increases with every TG I watch. The one 'joke' I did chuckle at was wiring the horn in to the brakes on May's car. The rest was just cringeworthy, no matter what cars were trashed.

They could have made an epic programme from a road trip through India. Ho hum.

Kinda proud of my girlfriends... we watched it together, last night, and she said ''why didn't the attach the winch to the subframe?!''.

I didn't even know she knew what a subframe was >_<
