I know less than nothing about ICE but isn't spdif a universal digital interface? I'd expect there to be some head units/ amps with an input and digital means you either get the signal or you don't (no quality issues) the only questions is whether you can send a high enough bit rate. If you had a capable Android device, then it would probably be best to let it run the front end (html, java, rss) and pass the data 'n commands over wifi.
