This won't be a project thread for a total re-build (well it might be one day...), but I've fancied starting a project thread for a while, as much to keep a track of what I do to the car for myself as well as to keep some of you entertained! I've learnt so much from TMF about how to work on my car, I really can't thank you guys enough for helping me along to where I am now.

I purchased my car about a year and a half ago, a 1992 City E that was pretty much standard apart from a few little bits, such as having bonded on and smoothed in Group 5 wheel arches, tatty 13x7 Superlights, and clear rear lenses. I haven't got many pictures of what the car has looked like at it's many stages of modification, but suffice to say I have changed a lot on it since I got it.

The first thing I knew I wanted to do was to make the car look a bit more like a Mk1 Mini, a bit more retro, so I thought the best way to start that off was with an 8.4" to 7.5" Cooper S brake disc conversion kit, and some 10" wheels obviously! The first show I went to was MITP in August 2010, a couple of weeks after I bought the car. I spent a rather large amount of money there on some brand new 6x10 Mambas, some brand new bumpers, over riders and corner bars, a Mk1 Morris Cooper grille, and a few other bits and pieces.

The rest of the modifications since then have been mostly a blur of blood, sweat, and burning money, so I'll try and list what I've done to her over all:

Bodywise:

Mk1 grille (along with removing lip on bonnet),
Mk1 bumpers with over-riders and corner bars,
Italian Job style leather bonnet straps and three spot light lamp bar (now with two extra fogs on home made brackets),
Wind deflectors,
Sticker-bombed A-Panels (mostly to cover up rust),
Group 2 Wide wheel arches,
6x10 Wellers to replace the Mambas,
Mk1 Rear lights,
Mk1 Bootlid

Interior:

Installation of dashboard and three clock setup, with three auxiliary dials and a stereo in the middle,
Home made centre console (was actually my A-Level Design Technology Project),
Speakers in rear parcel shelf and up front beneath the dash, along with a compact sub-woofer under the rear seats,
Cobra Classic (imitation) seats,
Mountney steering wheel and cheap leather gear knob

Engine:

Started off with a standard 998 (flat top pistons and long final drive being an "E" model), now has:
Single box RC40 (pipe flairs out to 2" at the tip), on a Maniflow freeflow manifold,
Twin HS2 carbs,
12G295 head,
Aldon electronic ignition (no more points to worry about),
Splitfire HT Leads,
Minispares 2-core performance radiator

Suspension/Brakes/Other odds and sods:

Hi-los front and rear,
Adjustable heavy duty tie-rods,
7.5 Cooper S set-up with Goodridge braided hoses,
Poly bushed engine steadies with additional steady on rear left hand side of gearbox,
Solid mounted front subframe

I'm sure there's other stuff that I've missed, but that's enough to bore you for a while :P

I use the car every day to drive in to uni and back, and frequently travel up and down the motorway to see my Dad back at home (about 80 miles one way) and to see my girlfriend at her uni (about 180 miles one way), so the Mini gets a few miles put on her!

I've still got plans for many other modifications such as suspension upgrades and maybe converting the doors to Mk1 hinges, and I really need to sort out some of the rust this summer as it's getting pretty bad in places now. Whatever happens shall depend on if I can find a part time job over the summer. I'm at uni at the moment so I've spent most of my grant money on the car (rather than drinking myself to death like a proper student ) and I really need to keep the rest back for insurance in the summer, which isn't going to be cheap being a 19 year old male, especially now that Footman James won't insure me any more :errr:

Next expenditure will be the rolling road on March 20th, to get the car running better with the twins and 12G295 on! Also very interested to see the power and torque figures, the engines done about 96,500 miles now, but it's still got good oil pressure and doesn't make too many alarming knocking and tapping noises

Here's a few pics of what the car looks like now:

With a couple of mates cars at uni:

At the TMF South West Meet in January:

I'll try and update this as regularly as I can, but I probably won't be doing too much to her for a while.

Thanks for reading!

Any comments/suggestions/questions are welcome

Sven

You're at UWE! I've spotted this mini quite a few times now. Got to love the pot holes in car park 20!

They are ridiculous, I usually drive the long way round the top end of the car park and park on the far side to avoid the buggers! Feels like I've crashed in to a brick wall every time I go through one >_<

Do you drive anything that stands out that I may have seen in the car park? :teehee:

Looks cool, always good to see something a bit different. your suspension will be good, not sure if you could get away with it, but it looks like it could go lower. also it looks a little over arched at the front, it might be just me though. :)

Cheers, George. Yeah since I've put the Wellers on it is a little over-arched at the front, the mambas I had on before stuck out about another 1/2" and fitted just about perfectly. The plan in my mind at the moment is to get all fully adjustable suspension (actually have all the adjustable bits in the garage waiting to be fitted :teehee:), new Minispares Red Dot cones, and Protech shocks. Then get it all set up properly by someone who knows what they're doing (probably going to be Slark Race Engineering, will see what they're like after the RR on the 20th), and then change the arches for Group 2 Narrows. Hopefully the camber will bring the tops of the wheels in a bit, but who doesn't love a bit of poke? :shifty: I'm more one for handling and drive-ability over looks, but you're right it could go a tad lower if I really wanted to :P The front arches have also been cut really badly by a previous owner, with a huge portion of the A-panel and wing missing, so there's an enormous gap between the arch and the wheel at the rear of the front arches, so ideally new A-panels and wings would be needed some time to make it look less butchered :dozing:

To each their own, ey? The missus isn't too fond of the leather straps either... :shifty: ;D

I was probably going to take the lamps and straps off in the summer anyway, too many lights weighing me down in the corners :D

Yeah I do think they look a bit gay sometimes, but they were on the car when I got it and it just doesn't look like my car any more when I take them off... sounds a bit weird, I'm sure you kind of understand where I'm coming from :D I may break the emotional bond with them one day, who knows
