Why bother with a 0-60 time...It means nothing!! the mini is not designed for a drag strip!! But stick it on a twisty B road and it will munch much more powerfull cars...My 1380 does go well enough to keep up at the traffic light grand prix though!!

I wouldn't call the Mini's acceleration bad, as even some modern cars have slower 0-60 times. I think the main reason for their acceleration not being on par with modern, similarly powered city cars is that they only have a 4-speed 'box. This is especially true of the later MPi Minis, because their fourth gear was similar as the SPi's third, for more dignified motorway cruising - this obviously didn't help 0-60 times.

errr not really, a 1000cc mini engine only really roduces 70 bhp, i see modern engines putting our 80 - 90 bhp easily

More like 35hp, if we're comparing stock vs stock. Don't forget 4 gears and the aerodynamics of a hose brick.

really??? bahaha thats poor

Why bother contributing to a topic you know nothing about?

woowww that a little unfair now isntit? you dont even know me or what i know, i just was unsure on how much BHP a 1000cc mini engine put out.

Also - please point me in the direction of some modern 1.0s with 90 bhp! Current Ford Ka 1.3 is ~75hp, and iirc the previous one was about 60hp

Ford EcoBoost 1.0 125bhp...

Just sayin...

You could get 125hp from an 998 A-Series too if it had direct fuel injection and a turbo...

the reason a mini is not as quick 0 - 60 is simple its called evolution of technology and aerodynamics and old age.

You ever tried to run as fast as you used to? I have and i cant. A few horses have certainly left my stable.

Think you've got that the wrong way round.

4th is usually a 1:1 ratio, to get better crusing (i.e. lower revs for cruising), you'd have to go below 1:1, so 0.8:1 or something, whereas third gear would be 1.x:1.

Although apparently, the MPIs 4th gear ratio was still 1:1 Link. I would presume it would be the diff ratio which would be different.

lol ^ good example. It's why I find the whole mini 'scene' a bit silly now. Fair enough, we all have to start somewhere and ask questions. But it'd be nice if they tried to think about the answer themselves first.

If you actually read the original post, and my following posts, I have done that.

Two whole pages and only two people have addressed the topic directly! Everyone else is either completely missing the point, getting defensive, or talking about how fast their mini does or doesn't go!

That's a brand brand new engine, that isn't even out yet, which is meant to replace the 1.6 in the Ford Focus. My point was your average 1.0 is still not making 90bhp.

There's absolutely nothing up with the Mini's "technology", it's just basic physics....

35 horses will push a 6-700kg Mini just as well as 70 pushes a modern hatch-blob weighing in at twice as much - BUT the hatch-blob doesn't also have twice the frontal area to push through the air. So, as you go faster more of what power you have is needed to overcome the wind resistance. In fact oodles more, as the relationship between the air speed 'n power is cubic.

You're really looking at this the wrong way round, Minis are stupendously quick at low speeds, considering their dinky engines, because they are hand crafted from fairy dust compared to the modern bloaters.

http://www.bbc.co.uk...t_Engines_Dont/ - the first episode was even better at explaining how being 'ickle rocks if you can track it down.

All that aside, my 998 keeps up with my Grandads Citroen C1 to 60, the C1 is maybe half a second quicker as it dosnt have a knackered syncro on second  Its the same with me driving the Mini or my Grandad driving it, so its not bad driving from Grandad :D Past 60, the C1 takes it though.
