My other car is a modified Impreza Sti, which been mapped to run on shell V power, but most of my local shell garages are selling the regular shell fuel saver stuff from their V power pumps! So you pay for the good stuff and get the cheap stuff, but don't find out until you stick your foot in the carpet, then the knock light goes nuts!
Don't get me wrong, shell V power is excellent fuel (gave me an extra 17bhp due to the extra ignition advance that could be run) but just make sure you get what you pay for!

Yes; but hard to prove.

Very hard to prove, this problem has already claimed the cars original engine. The standard fuel caused detonation and melted No3 piston! I tried taking this up with the garage but no joy. So I've sent many letters and emails to Shell UK but we are still arguing over it. I even had a fuel sample from that tank of fuel tested, but shell don't agree with the results. I've also got the receipt to prove that I had put £50 worth of V power in the car at 8.16am and it died at 9.05am!

All the uprated fuels from anywhere are based on the company's regular offering with additional additives and boosters in, but these are very volatile and don't last long. When Shell used to offer Optimax, it used to loose an octane or two before it reached the forecourt and had a very limited shelf life. When a couple of weeks old it was back to regular petrol. The RON marked on the pump is I believe what it left the refinery as, because there is no way a forecourt could test every batch, so unfortunately any testing you do on any yourself isn't going to be very valid.
