Hi. I am starting a build thread for my rebuild of my Cherry Red Mini 30. I purchased the car in 2010 from a guy in Tamworth. She was a very reasonable price and didn't appear to be in too bad shape. She had an MOT and was taxed so I could legally drive her back home. However... To be honest, the MOT wasn't worth the paper it was printed on! She pulled to one side, there was literally NO suspension and the tires were all knackered. I wasn't bothered at all though. My intention was to renew everything anyway and like I said, she was a decent price. The engine ran like a dream! The gear change was smooth and there were no crunches and everything seemed to work as it should. I knew she needed new sills, door skins and the 'normal' mini bits.
I have owned mini's in the past and I have never forgiven myself for selling them. Especially my second mini, which was a 1998 MPI Cooper in Red. I will see if I can find a picture of them. I would LOVE to know if anyone on here owns them.
My progress, so far, has been slow to say the least.. I didn't quite realise how much work I needed to put in to the rebuild. When I got Cherry I had a fairly stressful job which took up most of my time. Now I have changed jobs and I seem to be making some decent progress. I have also just purchased a welder!
I am an absolute beginner with car restoration so I know I am going to make mistakes and fluff ups. I have been reading the forum for ages now and have been commenting and following allot on various topics. I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone can give me. As I am sure you will come to realise. I don't have a clue! haha. Cheers, Joe.
Anyway, here is how she was when I first got her.

This took us ages to do as we had to rebuild the door pillar etc and at the time I was relying on someone coming over with a welder as I didn't have my own, or even know how to weld.

While we were doing these bits of bodywork I refurbished most of the bits and bobs from the mini.
Just a few pictures...

The Engine has also been stripped and I am currently overhauling it. I have got a cylinder head from a 1098 clubman engine and I plan on using it with my original 998. I have stripped it and it is awaiting skimming and converting to unleaded.

I am fairly happy with how it is coming on.. I just need a new gasket set, the head needs refurbing at the engineers place and it needs reassembling..

Today I have been fixing the front end up some more. There was some dodgy welding done on the drivers side inner wing. (by me when

I first got my welder, not proud..) it is doing the job but isn't pretty. So I decided to patch over it.
Posted Image
Posted Image

I had to do the same for the other side as it had had a repair at some stage in it's life and was partly missing..
Posted Image
Posted Image

I then set myself on fire.. !! Could have been nasty.. thankfully it wasn't lol
Posted Image

I then mended the passenger side shock mount base.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

I then welded the drivers footwell flitch.

Posted Image

Tomorrow I am going to tackle the boot area..

Thanks for Looking.
Joe
