I see it's time to dust off my guide to acknowledging other vehicles.

Other minis .... grin and wave madly and/or flash commensurate with road safety. If feeling manic, cheer. Nearly always returned. If not, it's probably because the driver was staring in horror at the temp gauge. Or something.

Other popular-price classic cars, eg Austin 7s, small Fords, Rootes family (Imp, Stiletto etc), and that whole generation of family cars like the Austin Cambridge ... single sensible wave, smile. Usually reciprocal.

Posh classic cars, eg old Morgans, Jags, Daimlers, Bristols, Alvises etc ... languid arc of the right hand, as if royalty. Sometimes returned, but prepare to be ignored.

Hot rods, usually Ford Pops ... Vulcan sign for "live long and prosper". These people are from another automotive planet. Respect.

All VW dub vans, modified or not ... peace, man. Two fingers (right way round) moved from side to side like a rabbit trying to dodge airgun pellets. If you have beads, wave them.

Everything else except BMW minis ... check out for usual points of interest, eg nice wheels, or blonde.

BMW minis .. notice something extremely interesting on the road ahead and stare fixedly at it.

The only flash from a BMW mini I would respond to would have to be from a blonde with large "accessories" and not using her headlights!!!!!

I own a rather rapid R53 BINI as a daily, and I flash classics most of the time I see them! Waved at one today actually, a lovely Clubman front van heading into Maidstone if anyone knows of it.... :D

And for those people saying that the new MINI scene isn't as friendly or enthusiastic, track back 50 years to when the Mini was one of the most popular cars on the road, im willing too bet that not every owner waved at each other then! :P Still need more evidence? Have a browse on the minitorque forum, one of the best and craziest car forums I've ever been on... Its easy too say that the new MINI community isn't as good as the classics when all you look on is TMF! Peace! :D

You are absolutely right, classic Mini drivers did not wave at each other when they were as common as MINI's are now (I was there driving one) and MINITorque is a great example of an enthusiast forum with some amazing MINI project threads!

I get flashed and waved at everyday by 2 classics on my way to work as well as many other classic cars that always wave. When I had had my classic It was only really on the way to shows when I got flashed!
Most MINI drivers are just that and to them it is just a car nothing more just like any Ford/Vauxhall on the road. Those that enjoy driving the MINI attend shows etc understand what the flashing is about and do if you flash and wave. Remember people that many MINI drivers might have a classic that they use on a weekend or its being worked on. The mini family has a great bunch of people in it and with both can only get stronger by bringing more in to the fold, 3 people that I work have brought classics in the recent weeks because they like mine and want to join the club and go to shows. Sticking fingers up/swearing at MINI drivers does not give a good first impression to others.
Go on a give a little wave it doesn't hurt to :proud:

I would flash back if they acknowledged me first, but other than that, No way Jose.I've recently purchased a 1972 Mark 3 Landy , I intend to acknowledge all other Landies I meet on the road and any other classic car, which I have always done since I got Mr. Bridger

Why not, I find most aren't paying attention but for the ones who want to say hi, then I'm happy to say hi back....been blanked by at least 3 VW campers in the last month,so I'm happy to wave to anyone friendly..we tend to get a steady stream of classics running past us here. Of course, I do occasionaly forget I'm in the Volvo and get blank looks......

I think most bini drivers wouldn't know what a mini was ifit ran over their foot! No point flashing them. Not with your lights anyway

I don't flash, most of the young girls driving Bini's around here are having a hard enough time driving in a straight line, plus they only up them as a fashion statement, it isn't a way of life like for most classic owners.
