The shell used to be just another part number which could be ordered from your local BMC dealer.
So long as the shell is the correct type/model surely there is nothing wrong morally with that. Of course, the V5 Police' will be along shortly.

Virtually all the ex-works rally Minis, which changwe hands at around £100k have been re-shelled. so what?

They were reshelled with new shells generally and only riveted chassis plates at that time so you could eradicated the original ID totally.
Nothing wrong morally but some immoral ringing has spoit it of late.

Re-shelled lots of Mini's over the years for road and racing, using both new shells and legitimate used shells, mainly back in the 1970 & 80's when not even the DVLA much cared. For instance I know of a lot of Mk1 Cooper S that enthusiasts drool over today at shows that were rebuilt on 'Mk1 Mini 850 automatic' donor shells back in the '80's when it was simply not worth financially restoring a rusty Cooper S shell. The restorers bought the rust free 850 autos as shell donors off 'little old lady owners' so nothing was stolen!
