drop a 2nd hand engine in your car mate, can be done in a day from start to finish.

I thought sod it and poured maybe 0.75 litres of oil in...

...looked underneath the car.....

Oil pouring out the bottom of the engine somewhere...

And its not the gear selector seal thats for sure haha

Well that would explain the loss of oil and subsequent loss of oil pressure.

Engine swap time!

if you have the time to check it out and fix the leak then have a good look at the engine first.
the engine could be fine could be no good. but untill you have a good look there no real way other than guessing. which everyone is.

if you have not got time and you know of a good running engine then swap it.

but be care full you could end up buying an engine thats just as bad or worse,
if you can buy an engine u can see running.then good. promises and shoulds don;t mean alot.

if you change the engine and then find out later the engine is fine you could always sell it one spares for 100 quid.

For now I'd rather swap it... as this 998 I can buy has a good head and runs well @ 55 bhp.. I know the lad who I'm buying it off and any issues I can be round his house in 2 minutes, no doubts there

I like the spares idea... Always a way to make a bit of money back

if you know its a good engine then i personal would swap it.
a garage would do the same. they won;t want to be farting about with it

a little project to strip it down have a good look after its out

Just to add my bit, I stripped down and refreshed my engine during my on going build. It was probably the most enjoyable bit so far and it was my first ever engine work. Very glad I did it and as you say, you will learn loads. Keep an eye out on fleabay for a bargain to shove in while you do it !!

Cheers Graham! As I say a lad has a 55bhp 998 down the road sitting in his garage so hopefully collecting that later this week! A rebuild on that knackered one I have will be cool!

Check you pot joints conditions you might need new one if oil is leaking from there.

Most likely your engine won't be in tip top shape, especially as by your latter posts suggests there was absolutely no oil in it, but to look on the positive side, I have found the a series to be surprising resilient.

Had one situation where I was loosing oil pressure slowly on the motorway so to compensate I drove faster to increase the revs got to the point where i was only making 20 psi at 4000. 5 psi at idle. Pulled over oil level was fine, no obvious leaks, was planning on rebuilding the engine anyway and didn't want to wait for the AA, so drove the remaining 10 miles, by the time i got back oil light on, oil pressure gauge at zero unless 3000 plus rpm. Had resigned to the fact it was scrap, but was impressed she'd made it back. Thought i'd drop the oil see what state it was in, but nothing too bad, so changed it and put a new filter on. Fired her up made good pressure and ran for another 5000 miles till a ring went and the oil consumption and smoke from the breathers was unbearable, another 1000 or so. I'll admit I think i was very lucky, but don't give up hope till you have properly assessed

I think the fact oil just poured from somewhere underneath just made me think it'll be easier to swap to save time and effort diagnosing this engine while in the car...

Like above, I can keep or flog my old one if needs be
