Hey everyone,

I recently purchased a K&N air filter cone for my mini City E 1985 but i'm having problems fitting it. I am running a hif44 carb on my 998cc engine but just don't know how to fit the air filter (just starting up on minis). Any help on fitting the filter would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

A hif44 carb is far too big for a 998. Sure it's not a HIF38?

To fit the filter remove the airbox (2 wing nuts)

Remove the elbow on the carb. 90 degree piece with a screw bolt either side. Keep hold of the bolts.

Dismantle K&N filter, and take bacplate piece (biggest bit)

Attach to carb using new gasket and screw nuts

Do up spanner tight

Fit filter and top plate, securing with single 10mm nut.

Bobs your uncle. You may need a different needle to take account of the different fueling characteristics.

The HIF44 is really to big for a 998 engine and makes me wonder what needle its running? the filters are bolted onto the carb with 2 bolts and then a central bolt on the filter element.

I would seriously think about changing the carb for a HIF38 which jetted correctly will be better on the 998

Thanks guys!

I have a mate who works with minis and we fitted a new exhaust and the hif 38 that i had on it before just didnt want to play game. He therefore took me to buy a hif 44 which we fitted so i had to buy an AAA needle for it. Still not running perfectly so he told me to buy a K&N filter for it which i've done so i'll try your tips to get it on:)

WIll it run comfortably on a HIF44? Because i really dont want to have to replace it again :(

It won't run perfect with a '44. It's only 4 bolts and an hours work if your mate who works on mini's knows what he's doing. The 44 will keep it running, but if it were me i'd get a 38 of ebay, clean it up, buy a rebuild kit for it, rebuild it, then fit it. You'll learn a lot in the process, and you'll also know the carb is good. Then get your mate to help fit it.

Once fitted, if you still have the K&N air filter and exhaust fitted, I'd advise an AAU needle, and go from there (ie, it'll run perfectly after a rolling road. Well worth it.)

Cheers for that mate! Might have to look into the 38 although i had that one before, i guess it must have been faulty. Not sure why my mate would get me to buy a HIF 44 for it if it wont work properly:/ Also, is it because of the carb that the choke won't pull out? This carb is so annoying haha

No problem. A 38 is ideal for a basic (stage 1) 998. if you still have your old one it should be possible to fit. What exactly was the problem?

Is the outer sleeve of the choke cable resting on the exhaust? I had that on mine and the head had seized the cable. Does the mechanism on the carb turn fine?

No i dont have the old one, i traded that in for the 44 because my friend told me it was wise to do that :(

Umm i couldnt say now, i'll have a look tomorrow, i got a new choke cable so would be a bit gutted if it's dead already:/ Everything seems to be going wrong at the moment! haha

It would have been a good swap if you had the 1.3 engine, but it's overkill on a 1l.

Just check if the mechanism and cam on the carb rotates properly and smoothly. If it does it's the cable that is at fault. If it's been resting on the exhaust manifold then that would be the cause of the problem.

False alarm, it's not a hif 44 carb, it's a hs4 carb which should be better right?
