I'm curious now.
Having spun the engine with no plugs to get oil pressure (well in excess of 20 revolutions) and spun the engine to set the dwell angle before attempting to start the engine there should be a reasonable amount of scrapy-scrapy going on with the new rings.
Initial mixture settings are always a bit of a SWAG (pick a suitable needle and go two turns down with the jet), but a cold engine will need a richer mixture to start - this is an unavoidable fact of life.
How do you start a stone cold brand new engine with a weak mixture ?
