DAY 2:
.....
Mission: take the wings off......
So later on today i started to tackle the removal of the wings, a-panels, front panel (what was left).
Heres the photo goodness i know TMF folk seem to crave ......:
First up is das panels removed:
R.I.P. flitch panel haha...
Had a closer look :/.......:
A rough clean up with a wire brush showed no corrosion to the stiffener yeayaaa:
Now came the inspection of other parts that i didnt intend on doing yet i know thats never the case.
So heres more to add to the parts list....:
Theres no doubt a big rot hole behind the shocker mount & notice the crack in the wavy bodged inner wing, seems its been involved in a offside fender bender as innerwings err well (look at it haha) & the offside wing had NO spot welds holding it on, just more house hold silicon.
Has made it easy to strip though .
Cones are fecked & were about 3cm off the bumbstops hitting the top arms:
Ohh & some black silicon (possibly RTV) wedged behind the a-panel area :
& finaly, a big mess i found under the car that im not looking forward to peeling off
For those of you who dont know whats wrong with the last two photos i shal explain.....
What you see above are sills running the length of the car, problem is these "un-vented" sills are a way of bodging a mini for MOT & not a proper repair.
Theres a cavity in there & it needs to be vented & allowed to breath.
These are the correct sills needed:

Thanks for viewing.

Looks a good project!! Best of luck!
__________
Thankyou.
The list is gettjng more mini-ish as i go along haha (i.e. getting longer, costing more).

Looks like new inner wing needed there. Probably better to do that rather than smashing repairs everywhere.
Lots or rust and i bet there is a whole host of nasties just waiting under those oversills.
Good luck with that little lot it will keep you busy.

Haha i know im dreading "The Big Peal" haha, im sure some lovely brown metal awaits.
Yeah not to sure yet as i already have flitch repair & i know the offside inner wing repair piece comes past the shocker mount so purely on the basis of budget or budgeting im going that route as mr genuine scuttle will turn my wallet into helium density .
Indeed i will be very busy & very poor no doubt.
Onwards on downwards.

looking good mate i have those sills on my mk1 mini? are they the wrong ones? or are they like that? cheers tom
Posted 02 May 2013 - 04:41 PM
Cheers tom, i have seen mk1's with no vents & no ridges which i understand came 100% sealed on early mini's,
but you should go for vented all the way, these are the correct sills your after http://www.minisport...nfo_MCR95R.html
(NOTE: The 4 vents instead of the six that mk3- have.
Although you're gojng to be getting a whole new floor no doubt in your mk1 tom so you can get them pre-spot welded on the floor assy if you state to them (atleast you can with M-machine).
