It's possible you have some wear in the shaft and bushing and oil is getting up into the main body from the engine

Check for play for and aft in the distributor shaft thats where its coming up, either to crankcase pressure or just plain wear in the shaft bearing.

Check one thing first, before assuming the worst. With the engine running, remove the oil filler cap and place the palm of your hand over the hole. Disposable glove recommended at all times when risking contact with used engine oil!
If there is general suction (some pulsation due to piston movement is normal) your breather is fine, so the problem lies with the distributor. I recommend that you have it overhauled or reconditioned, with a new shaft and bearings. A worn shaft makes the timing somewhat erratic and impairs performance, fuel consumption and emissions, so having it fixed will be cost effective in the long term.
Distributor Doctor have a good reputation:

Edit: You could asking them to supply just the bits you need and do it yourself. I don't know if they supply individual parts but it costs only a phone call to ask.
