what about something a little different: a kia venga ecoboost 1.5D turbo ? i've learnt to drive in a 62 plate model and its really nice to drive and gives a good kick when the turbo spools up plus it has good mpg

Recently had an 08 plate tdci fiesta, lovely car and very economical, but after the turbo went i decided it was time to sell it. So im on the market for another derv. Got a fairly reasonable budget, so can afford something fairly new and super economical. Only catch is my 19 year old lass with 0 no claims and 6 points on her license and im using my no claims on another car of mine, will be on the insurance. Any recomendations?
a classic mini :) get a 1275, >1990 model :)

I'd recommend Volkswagen group cars; the diesels are very smooth, refined and get good mileage. We have them for company cars and to be honest, you're spoilt for choice, the only cars we haven't liked have been the skoda fabia scout (slow, cramped and badly put together for some reason) and the polo 1.2 three cylinder diesel which lacked power completely to the point where it was just frustrating. The bigger engined polos are fine and have great build quality. The seats/skodas are practically the same as the VWs except for the body and the trim levels so you should find something at the right price.

what sort of mileage are you doing? some of the modern petrols, by the time you take into consideration life costs, are cheaper to run these days.
having said all that though, I'd stick with the VAG group personally (I've been a loyal fan for far too long now!)

Citroen make some good diesel engines. If you can pick up a nice DS3, its a cute car too. I know its thin steel but it will hold its value.

Volkswagen AG Makes the best diesels at the moment: good mpg, reliable and powerfull.

Pretty much any off the modern diesels, if a decent size, are going to be ok to be honest. The obvious option is something from the VAG group, a BMW or the like. The Fords and Vauxhalls will also be there or there a bouts as well.
If economy is the absolute priority, the Blue Motion range of engines looks to be the best bet. Although the Mini diesels can supposedly get some miles out of each gallon.

I use my 2004 TDCI Focus every day and do a lot of miles. I have had mine from new and its on around 170,000 miles and has been pretty good.
They are dirt cheap as they are getting old now but I get over 60 miles to the gallon.
I service it myself and so far the only non service parts I have changed are:
Front suspension links £20
Front and rear brake discs £50
Battery £40
Intercooler hoses £60
Cam sensor £15
4x injectors £400

Bluemotion Golf will punch out 65mpg all day long. I use one of the company Golfs on out little treks from Gatwick to Heathrow with 4 decent sized blokes in it and a boot full of tools. 65mpg was the result travelling at "cough cough" 70mph officer.
1.6 Diesel so should be ok for your insurance.

Mate has just had the clutch done on his. He needed a new flywheel as well which is quite common I believe. Cost him just shy of £1200!I use my 2004 TDCI Focus every day and do a lot of miles. I have had mine from new and its on around 170,000 miles and has been pretty good.

Yes its a dual mass flywheel. £120 for the parts; that sounds like a lot of fitting costs. I stopped using Ford Main dealers after the warranty period.
