This comes up so often I cannot believe there are still people who give the wrong answer when it gets asked.
It's a brake fluid warning lamp, the same as in any other car. Don't think of it as a switch. If it lights up by itself at any time, check your brake fluid. Pressing the switch tests the bulb only, the same way the handbrake warning does in other cars. Of course this does mean that if it lights up when you press the switch it should be all good as said above, but there is more to it that needs to be stated. Oh and you should also check to see if the cap on the fluid reservoir is working now and then, under the rubber cover on it there should be a plunger. Push the plunger right in, or lift off the fluid cap and let it drain, and the light should show too.
No, the Checkmate didn't come with spots and I don't remember them being an option on mine. Although they may have been since the Cooper pack was an option. I don't imagine there are any particular spots which are the 'right' ones for it.
