The option packs available from JCG included spots, 5x12 minilites, corner bars and some other stuff

The only 'genuine' pack for these cars was the engine conversion though.  It was a dealer fit Rover product that could be ordered through any dealer with a new Racing/Flame/Checkmate and was covered by warranty.  These cars were the start of the late Coopers and when they were first introduced it was very much an experiment, there was no close relationship between Rover and JCG at the time.

Yeah it was from JCG, not rover and not sure that you could have it fitted at the dealer at the time, only yhe engine conversion was available through the dealers

if you remeber there was a lot of stuff you can get from the garage since the 80ies, not only the engine conversion, and many retro stuff was available mainly for the japan market, would be great to find some of the rare old brochures, there was one around in B&W when i was a kid and then others came out way before rover re-introduced the cooper

NOW... few niggles... but i knew there would be.

1. radiator/coolant system leaks somewhere ??

2. Gear selection is a little stiff ( dont know if its the gear selector or the gearbox??)

3. doors wont shut flush ... they stick out when closed... ive adjusted the catch that the latch clips onto as far back as it goes but it still sticks out about 15mm

4. wrong grill (must source original panel grill)

5. wrong door furnishings

6. stage 1 kit to be fitted.

7. seat belts to be replaced with new inertia belts.

8. aftermarket dash to be re-covered / painted / tidied ?

Comments welcome, Gear related advice as to fault diagnose this stiffness much appreciated

How much coolant its loosing? If quite a lot could be the baypass hose

Also try changing the oil for some quality 20w50 and see if gear selection improves

Jaydee, ill order a new filter this week and ill get some 20w50 in her when i drop the old. the whole selection of gears is just pants, i picked up my neighbours tihiti yesterday and the gear leaver moves so freely even when off. mine is very stiff by comparison!!

also i have a exhaust manifold and heated alloy inlet manifold in the garage that came with my clubby that im doing the full resto on, along with an exhaust standard 2' side exit like a stage one kit. im tempted to order the rest of the stage 1 kit and see if that smooths the engine out a little.

coolant is really random... i drove her for 2 weeks with no over heating then when she was v hot on the gauge i pull over checked... no water. topped her up next day she overheated again, but has lost very little since.  O_O  weird!!

Drove through a massive rain storm today and the red ignition light started flashing at me... any ideas ?? keep them coming gents

The red light glowing when passing through a massive rainstorm is just that you need to cover the alternator a bit better to avoid water getting into it, for the other stuff its a bit difficult to say without viewing the car

Cliff ill have a read :D

ok all

so today i started my stage 1 upgrade on the checkmate (after popping to a classic car rally in the landy)  ive got the old exhaust off

EE324921-0E44-499C-A157-C839754321D0-460

i got the new exhaust in :D

33FE78E7-B096-4FA0-A14D-4DD38236A34D-460

so the RC40 exhaust, maniflow exhaust manifold, mini speed inlet manifold all fitted.

i tested her before i drove her tomorrow morn, and she is running like a bag!!

ive got a 'Red' spring for the carb a pipercross air filter and a stage 1 needle for the carb but they havnt been fitted yet. is this just a case of no air getting in but no back pressure as too much air is getting out ??
