What needle?

You probably need an AAM and set idle mixture to 2.5% CO at idle

one step forward....

so ive fitted the carb needle and spring. Great!! but not the setup of the carb needs to follow.

couple of problems...

-i managed to get the engine running and with plenty of choke will idle at about 2000rpm. i think thats a little high.

-when i had the carb off, the pot was dry as a bone, am i right in thinking oil should come up from the block to the carb or should i fill it from the damper hole ??

-engine has developed a high pitched anoying squeal when not under load, but it goes away when under load.

-acceleration pedal is in about the midway position ??

apart from that with the needle spring exhaust and airfilter when accelerating she feels better

guidance appreciated  :P

You need to fill the dash pot up with oil, i think it's about 1cm from the top.

Use your engine oil, when you remove the damper, you'll see theres a small inner tube, thats the piston, which is the part you have to fill with oil.

this was me today i made 1 carb out of 2 as the original needle in mine is seized in the piston!

So i dont need to fill the whole dashpot with oil just the center pipe that the dampening piston goes into ??

Exactly, just the small inner pipe

Fill it with engine oil, then carb will 'self-level'

i filled it, but im now diagnosing the squeal. aparently its likely to be an air leak somewhere in or the mating face of the carb.

ok so tightened the carb to the manifold and the squeal has gone :D now this morning with a lot of choke to start she started and idled a bit lumpy then when warm idled fine at 1000rpm or just under which acording to haynes is ok. she drives a little better that before :D

now to just drive her and fix the clubman !!!

somethings never change.... no strapwrench/oilfilter wrench so the screwdriver and hammer method was used!!

Oil change done today, new filter 5ltrs of 20w50 classic from halfords and a sump washer later. the old oil was BLACK!!

it hasnt done anything to help the slightly stiff gearchange though ?? its free from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th but stiff though the change over from 2nd to 3rd

hmmmmmm  :shifty:
