Hi all, I'm new to minis and have just bought a 1988 austin red hot, need to know what the carb on it is because the pipe going from the float chamber to the jet was leaking petrol from the float chamber side (temporary fix at the moment by using some pipe as a seal on top of the existing pipe), read up on it and it seems that the seals go due to age after a while, so I need a new one.

However...

The car has a 1275 engine in and I've been told it has a stage 2 induction kit but I can't verify this, so I don't know what to buy. I also don't know what stage 2 induction kit actually means :ohno: , and the seller doesn't either as she bought it as it is and hasn't altered it. I'm trying to get in contact with the man who did the engine rebuild to ask him exactly what it is, but I could do with some help.

The float chamber has AUD 9203 stamped on it but that doesn't really help... the damper has AUC 8103 but apparantly that was fitted to many su carbs so doesn't help either

The carb has a square gasket where it goes onto the engine but slightly curved on two of the sides. I can take more pictures if needbe

That looks like the std Mini Hs4 bolted to an alloy (MG?) Inlet manifold

Thanks for the reply but the hs4 has a different shape front where it bolts onto the manifold, like kinda curved, mine looks more like this one which is a HIF but it can't be because mine has a float chamber next to it

Your carb is an HS4, just a bodged one.

Ask the seller what he classes a 'performance stage 2 induction kit' because i might class this as 'bodge stage 2 bugs induction kit'.

How many bolts/stud/nuts hold the carb to the manifold? It looks like the HIF spacer fitted, I agree, but I am 99% sure thats an HS4

Get a decent second hand HIF44 for the 1275

just for  the record the bit you think looks like the fixing of a HIF is actually a spacer, not part of the carb

Thanks for everyones help, is the HIF44 a lot better than mine? had a quick google and it seems it's the newer version but made for the cooper engine so i'd have to replace the needle or risk problems with over fuelling? Not entirely sure which engine I actually have to be honest, just know it's a 1275, guessing a standard one or it'd have twin carbs right? Unsure, I think I might just buy the part for my carb and leave it at that just in case, save my money haha. I could do with a new radiator anyway which should be a bit less expensive. any recommendations? thanks again :D

Much better casting, less needle valve issue, better fuelling, better piston, no problems with the throttle spindle and the only downside is the bimetallic strip.

Ah and make sure you use an LZX2085 damper.
