Hi guys!

i got a 1978 mini 1000  automatic! my insurance was cancelled due to the post messing up and them not retrieving a copy of my licence.

Im 18 years old and im a mechanic and work 7 days a week to get what i want in life and i got robbed £1975.00 for my insurance for a year! i think its completely nuts how they can charge that much for an 18 year old lad for his first cover!

what i really want to find out from you guys is if theres any of you who are like me, at my age who have managed to get cheaper quotes from people who arnt just trying to get as much as they can out of you because they think your going to be like everyone else and drive like dicks! although i actually respect my car so so much!!!

any help would be appreciated as im so screwed and cant drive my mini:(

I get much cheaper quotes by being the main policy holder and adding older more experienced drivers to my named drivers, in my case my parents, shaved loads off for me  :shades:

Thats not a bad price being a mech aswell, being in the motor trade especially mechanics pumps the price up and being a new driver makes it expensive, I was paying £1400 for my first year being 19 and a student / sales assistant, that was on my '84 mini 25 998cc manual,

but shopping around is the best way to get a cheap quote but you wont get much better I recon, oh and call up and dont accept the first quote, they can normally go cheaper :)

My first quote last year:

18 years of age
1 week after passing text
1275cc 91 cooper
Adrian flux

£2700! Third party fire and theft and restricted to 5000 miles! I was originally being quoted £5000 + !
So yh your quote could have been worse lol i agree insurance for young drivers is ridiculously expensive!

When it came to renewal with one year no claim, Adrian Flux asked for £1600 with same conditions. I decided to thoroughly research insurance companies as I knew I could do a lot better. Found a quote by Admiral for £600 fully comp and 6000 miles! Managed to get it down to £494 through multi car discount! :)

Definitely worth looking around properly to make sure you are getting the best quote. I would recommend Admiral due to the significant difference in their quote for me!

I'm 17 - for my first year, fully comp, 998 with a few mods declared such as different steering wheel, alloy wheels etc, I paid £1060. I got a £100 classic car discount. I recently checked with the same insurance company what I would expect to be paying next year (so 18 with one years no claims) and that came out at around £650. That is without the classic car discount. The price for a similar 1275 was £657.  :proud:

which insurance company

Diamond through comparethemarket.com. The price for Admiral was very similar to Diamond as they are the same company.

Best price I got was with privileged...this was for a 1989 city 998cc (me being 17 and having just passed...that same day in fact!)- £1600.

Checked a week or so ago what it'll be next year with some nice engine mods I'm doing - £700! Incredible!

I found moneysupermarket to be a lot cheaper than the others so worth taking a look - but that may just have been me!

What I also found though was with such an old car (30+) you're going to have a much harder time...I found a lovely 1977 mini brilliantly restored for a price within my budget but it was too old to insure reasonably :(

Edit: just did a quick look up - my insurance would've been £2500+ on that 1977 :(
