im having problems with my idler gear it always seem to chatter when its warm ive tried to do it a few times but its always the same result. im wondering what gap starts to cause the noise if any body knows

Replace the idle gear bearings.......

i have with the torrington bearings

Ok your clearance for the idler is 3 to 8 thousands of a inch......

ye i got the clearance from haynes and im pretty sure ive set it to 4 thou every time but when it gets warm it chatters till clutch is pressed so im wondering what clearance it actually takes for the idler to chatter and if my 4 thou is actually bigger because im doing it wrong

How are you measuring it ? Ideally you want the engine and box split. Then reassemble the gearbox and transfer housing with all gears and gaskets in place and the bolts torqued up. Then measure the clearance......

Are you dure its the idler gear and no excessive backlash in the main gearset, quite common.

im not sure about backlash but ive took the full drop gears out of a engine i know was quite so im going to use them. i also wondered if when im putting rtv sealant on the gasket its affecting the preload?

Its a simple test, just hold the gearbox input gear and ratttle it backwards and forwards quickly, if you hear the noise thats your problem!

cheers il try that. once ive set the idler gear to 3 though should i still be able to push it backwards and forwards slightly in the casing cheers
