I've had this problem on two occasions now. I believe it all started when a loose connection to the alternator regulator caused it to overcharge, and subsequently boiled the battery. Fixed this problem, battery stayed as it was as it seemed ok. Went to start the car the next day after finishing work...nothing. The battery was dead. So with a new battery fitted (with the alternator problem now rectified) the car has been trouble free and starts on the key first time.

However, upon leaving college today (or trying to whichever way you look at it) the battery was once again dead. I don't think anything was left on, so I can only imagine that the alternator was playing up again and was constantly back feeding? Had to bump start it, but was fine all the way home. My volt meter read around 14.2v when running.

The only thing I can say is that for the past couple of mornings, it has run very lumpy (like a one-legged Mr Blobby).

Years ago I had a Mini that acted a bit like this, it turned out to be the Positive battery cable shorting to the body, it was usually worse when it rained!

Put a amp meter on the main battery + cable and see if you have a discharge showing with the ignition off and doors closed, if so remove the plug from the back of the alternator and redo the test, if no curent discharge showing then its the diode pack, if its still showing a discharge come back with more info on the type of car/year

It's ok now. Well actually there was never a problem...Basically there is a tiny switch concealed in the car, fitted by a previous owner. Ever since I got this car, throughout the restoration I had been flicking this switch to see if it did anything. I assumed it wasn't connected to anything due to the soldered wires hanging next to it. Miraculously, every time I flicked the switch, I flicked it back. In the college car park my friend found this switch and thought, 'Ooh, what does this do?' Hence my car wouldn't start on the key.

Thanks for your suggestions anyway, I'm sure they would have helped if a problem actually existed. >_<
