I run a seat ibiza cooler which sits nicely above the starter and below the slam panel so no need to cut the bonnet for vents

What I was going to do was make a a cardboard mock up of the biggest one I can fit then go to a scrap place and get one from there

Have a cossie one in my 1380, needed some work to fit but it certainly does the job. The engine makes mad power With very little boost. I did want to upgrade to a 4x4 one but need to change a lot to get it to fit so going to stick to what I have at the moment. Bonnet holes are good.on your 998 and small cooler should be ok, but get if down behind the grill for decent air flow!!

The more efficient the more boost. A more efficient cooler will give a lower intake charge temp. Providing you can get good airflow over the cooler. Larger is usually more efficient but not always. Also a large cooler with poor airflow wont cool the charge as well as a smaller cooler with a good flow over it

An intercooler is nothing without decent airflow over it, so it needs to be mounted in the best possible position.

Phil.

Would lifting the bonnet at the back help the air flow?

No, it's been proven that having the rear of the bonnet open slightly increases engine bay temp. Due to the Venturi effect the air rolls over and into ye engine bay from the back, stopping air flow passing through. Behind the grille, at the front seems to work!

The punto turbo intercoolers are good:)

Lifting the bonnet will let some heat out when the speed, & airflow, is low.  I suspect the worst effect will be on the airflow through the water radiator.

The windscreen acts as an air dam, so an area of higher pressure will develop in front of it, you get a decent idea by watching rain drops. you could experiment with tufts of wool around a raised bonnet, it might work if it's not too much to cause an eddy, or you might be better off with vents further forward.

Ok!

I will leave the bonnet down :(

Always thought it looked good haha

Does it work on some cars then? Or is it just the shape of the mini that makes it not work?

Also with the intercooler I've heated that a build of oil an sometimes happens in the coolers, is it best to clean out a used one? And would fitting an oil catch work?

You could always lift it and play about with blanking some of the opening to see what works. If the cooler came off a car with a blown turbo then it's likely it will contain some gunge. No harm in washing it through, against the usual flow direction.

Bonnet lifting was just a cool phase people went through, Sure Martin from MRA told me it had no gain at all.

most time people lift on mini's to clean engine convertions or 16valve heads
