ive managed to remove the engine out with a little help from a fellow mini owner,
ive got a compete unit engine redy to drop into the car, is there anything I need to check on the new engine before I do a re install..

I would check the bores, clutch, oil seals,..
Everything that wears out actually. because it would be a bugger if you had to change the clutch plate after 2K miles ![]()

hello,
I have carried out the engine swap,
I replaced my old unit with a 1275 from a newer age mini, I have used my original carb and all the ancillaries from my original engine aswell,
problem now is that its not running, when I crank it over with key its wants to fire up but dosent,
ive replaced the spark plugs and carried out a oil service aswell,
I can see the spark at the plugs but its not very bright,
any idea what else it can be,,,,

Did you set the valves, replace the spark plugs, check the cap, rotor, and plug wires replacing any that were suspect? If this is a points distributor, did you replace the points and condenser and set the points gap? Did you set the static timing when you installed the distributor? These are all things you should do so your new engine installation gets off to a good and reliable start.
Once you have done the things above if it still fails to start, try the following tests.
Disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and aim it into a glass jar. Have a friend turn the key to the run position. Fuel should pump in a pulsating stream into the jar. If it doesn't, look for plugged filters and kinked lines between the engine bay and fuel tank.
Once you know there is fuel, leave the fuel line disconnected from the carb but plug it. Take a thimble of the gas from the previous pump test and pour the gas down the carburetor throat. Now try to start the engine. If it fires very briefly and then stops, you have a fuel delivery problem. To have reached this point you will have already tested the fuel pump delivery so look for blockage at the float valve and make sure the piston and needle are free to move in the carb.

hi,ive used the distributor off my old engine, it was complete with the point so I have not replaced the point, the spark plugs are new,
I had a friend who set up the distributor/timing using the rocker cover off method,
at present the air cleaner is not on the carb, so I poured little fuel into the bowl and crank and it runs for v lillte period and does not sound healthy,
im gona check the fuel delivery at the carb today,
by the way any reason why the spark is very weak?
also this engine is from a newer age mini 1996, will this effect why its not running?

The spark may not be as weak as you think. If it is blue and occurs when it is suppoed to, that is what is necessary. If the spark is orange, try replacing the condenser.
If it runs on a thimble of fuel, sounds rough, and stops quickly, this points to a fuel delivery problem. Confirm the pump is pumping and after that, go through the carb starting with the float valve. Make sure it is clean and that the needle is not worn (replace if witness marks are on the needle tip). Adjust the float valve height as described in your manual. Once that is done, take a look at the main jet and mixture needle. If the car sat for a while, fuel varnish and gum could have built up on them which seriously restricts the flow of fuel to the engine. Make sure the piston in the carb is free to move up and down (when the dashpot cover is removed from the top of the suction chamber). Which carb are you using?
