Although I'm a fairly fanatical Facebook user, my only worry for TMF is that the important technical information (answers to people's technical questions) just gets lost on Facebook as it moves down the page. On the forum, the information is stored and others can search for it in the future.
Generally, the 500 Cooper Sport Register mostly operate via a Facebook group, and while it's great for the social side and works very well, I do worry that some of the information posted is lost, although they do have an excellent Registrar who logs important information.
So, the way that I see it is that the forum should be used for technical queries and the Facebook group for social, fun and dare I say trivial chat. Yes, you can do that on the forum, but personally I find Facebook a more convenient and less formal place to do this and sharing photos, particularly the odd snap is definitely easier . Many clubs/forums have a Facebook Page too, and it is very handy to have those Facebook groups in one place. However, I still use the forums too.
Personally, I don't feel it splits TMF particularly, or if it does, I'm not sure that it matters. It doesn't appear to cause problems for the Maestro & Montego Owners Club or Rover 800, which are the two other clubs/forums that I frequent the most. Although I'm a member of the Gay Classic Car Group, I tend to only use their Facebook group, not their forum as it's just easier, although anyone can join it their group, it's not just for GCCG members.
In all honestly, I don't have strong views about whether it stays or goes, as I mostly use the forum or post on both.and I can see that managing the Facebook group is a pain in the backside. I manage a small Facebook group of about 400 members, and although generally the membership are fine, just checking out those who want to join is time consuming, however, it does filter out the trainer and sunglasses sellers, so is worth the time.
Personally, I think it might have been nice (not really a fan of the word nice, but I can't think of another) to consult TMF's membership, although as the membership have no ownership of the TMF, obviously, TMF can do as they please and have no obligation to consult. However, I just think it sits better to gather members views and consider them, even if you do go ahead and close the Facebook group. If I were to consult, I would both consult through the forum and Facebook group.
