Valve Clearances - I Have None. Why?

engine

Best Answer Cooperman , 20 May 2014 - 07:44 PM

First of all the valve you are trying to adjust must be in the dwell position on the cam. To do this, you use the 'rule of nine'. This means you turn the engine and when one valve is fully open, you deduct the number of that valve from nine and adjust the valve of that number. So if, for example, valve no.6 is fully open, 9 - 6 =3, so adjust valve no. 3 to 0.012". Repeat until all 8 valves have been adjusted.

Ah ha, you just beat me to it Dave!

Evening all.

Having built up the head and fitted it along with the rocker gear the other day, I thought I would set the valve clearances. However, despite trying to adjust, I have no clearance at all. There is something not right and I can't figure it out. This is the first time I have built up an engine from the block up. Am I missing something really obvious?

Spec is as follows: A+ 1293 block with 21253 pistons, MG Metro head, standard A+ rockers, Minispares Evolution 001 camshaft, 9.9:1cr.

What did you do to 'adjust' the clearances, as in what was the actual procedure you used?

Slackened off the the locknut and tried loosening/tightening the stud. It's a long time since I've adjusted rockers (about 12 years!) so I am certain that I am not doing it right. The Haynes manual isn't exactly descriptive...

You check or set the valves by the rule of 9, valve 8 fully open adjust 1 -----7 fully open adjust 2 and so on

Dear Diary:

Today I have demonstrated why you should never work on an engine when you're really tired. I knew all about the rule of 9 - no issues there. However there is a part of my brain that throws logic in the corner. I was trying to adjust No1 valve when it was down. I feel suitably embarrassed and I think I need some sleep!!

Thanks guys. Sorry for wasting everyone's time on a really obvious issue!!
