Hi guys hope you are all well! Around April this year the head gasket went on the mini and has since been done by me and my dad (we have only just gotten round to it) anyway were all done and have got her sounding perfect but there's is a lot of blue smoke coming out the exhaust which I no is oil but just wondering what it could be from been looking at valve stem seals could it be these? Also can you do them without taking the head off? The car is currently on eBay and everything I'd perfect apart from that a few cosmetic bits but I don't want to sell it to someone and then it break as that affects my conscience to much so would like to sort it beforehand if possible? Originally I thought it was just running rich but the guy that looked at it yesterday wanted to buy it as he said the body work was absolutely perfect hehe so was happy with that but he reckons its the valve seals? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks jon

Under what circumstances does it smoke? On start up, or over run?

Is it using any oil?

What colour are the plugs?

If it is burning oil, it could be valve stem oil seals, valve guides, piston rings, or the head gasket.

Changing valve stem oil seals can be done with the head in place but you need specialist tools. It'd be easier and quicker to whip the head back off.

It does it from startup but only under reving if idling there is no smoke but when driving it smokes the whole time? There is no gunk/mayonnaise in the oil or radiator? The oil is nice and clean since the head has been done its probably only done 15miles tops as i don't want to make it worse but I thought it was only running rich until yesterday! The plugs are all working but are a bit black? I haven't noticed it using any oil though? As it hasn't really been driven?

What oil did you use?

Is the smoke blue or black?

If you're not sure and it's running rich, lean it off and see if the problem goes away

Just used 10-40? The smoke is blue but the exhausts are quite sooty? I've tried adjusting the mixture screw but don't really no what I'm doing I've true it all the way in and its the same runs with blue smoke? Also worth noting you don't need any choke whatsoever to start it and its starts on the button!

Sounds like it could be running too rich then if you can start it without the choke on.  Also if it has only done 15 miles since the head was done, perhaps it needs a good run and a tune up. Burning oil is usually indicative of white ish smoke and a smell of burnt oil. CAn you get the emmisions checked to see if it is indeed, running rich?

What year is the car? It should be running 20w50 unless its an auto.

As above, you need to get the mixture right, if its too rich you can get bore wash which will cause it to burn oil.

I had that happen to me many moons ago, the oil was so contaminated, it runied my engine.

Hopefully we can get the OPs car sorted before any damage is done

How do u adjust the carb I no how to do the idle and shes perfect there but the mixture screw (the screw under the fuel in pipe on a hif44) doesn't seem to do much whichever way you turn it? Also as far as I can find out blue smoke is oil? So if it was rich would I not be a different colour? Also is it possible the dashpot oil is to blame?

The oil in the engine is perfectly clear but fairly runny?

It sounds like you are using the wrong oil. 20W50 is correct for that engine so try changing the oil first. Has the head been re torqued since it's first run up to temperature??
