You really need to get your mixture in order before jumping on the 'it's burning oil assumption'. Reading your posts it definitely sounds as if your mixture is overly rich, access to the mixture screw on a HIF44 can be a bit fiddly when the Carb is in situ, are you certain the screw is turning when you adjust? Clockwise for richer, anti-clockwise to lean off.
If you're sure the screw is turning and still no change then you may have a totally inaccurate needle in the carb or needle excessively worn. Also I'd recommend removing then whipping the bottom off the Carb, (4 screws). At the bench with the carb off you should see the jet assembly moving up and down as you turn the mixture screw in/out, if there is no movement then you have a mechanical problem in the carb.
Do you know what Carb needle is in the hif44?

The hg was changed about a month ago and rubbish after so I changed the points condensor distribtor cap ht leads and still was poo so I did the valve clearances and happy days runs perfect apart from this smoke.however the reason I new the hg had gone was because it was running rich so i took it to a guy in Colchester to have the carb tined but he couldn't do it because there was no compression on cylinders 2 and 3 he reckoned the hg had gone so me and my dad did the work and now its Smokey but the carb was never set up but at the same time i don't really no what I'm doing with it and also am unsure as to what else can be done think maybe fuel and matches would be a good fix! Thanks guys much appreciated

It could be oil that got into the bores/exhaust  when you took the head off, it may need a good running session to burn the oil off.

If you can turn the screw on a HIF type SU with no difference in the CO reading then the lever has broken off inside the float chamber that raises and lowers the jet (common)

If you have a co meter you can see the mixture alter, otherwise by winding it out the engine will run weak and stutter/stall, or take the dashpot off and see if you can see the jet moving up/down.

Poo tho is proving to be horrendous i wish I was clever! Re tprquing the head bolts didn't work and neither did adjusting the mixture! And I'm assuming it did adjust because as I turnt the screw the revs changed??

If you have the carb setup and the timing is correct and its burning oil then points to all is well engine wise, have you pulled the plugs and had a look to see if they showing signs of excess fueling which could also make it smoke

The timing has been done using a strobe light, however the plus are quite black? Is it worth adjusting the carb so that the fuel is most lean and running it like that for a bit?

Ok I've just reread all the posts and realised that I didn't put 10-40 oil in! It was 0-40 mobil1 would this cause it or am I clutching at straws?!
