A length of White 1.0mm 32/0.20mm. would be a good gauge wire for a coil feed wire and will take 16.5a

You can work out how many amps a 12v coil draws by the formula

amp = volt / ohm

12v dev by 3.5ohms = 3.4amps approx

Ok will sort the wire, but if I have 3.4a at the coil, why would I need a 16a wire?
Im not doubting you, but just wanted to know the basic theory to it. Thanks again, Olly

Volt drop thicker wire gives less and more voltage on starting

Hi all, done some testing of the coil and here is the resutls.
Straight off battery= 12.7v
Ignition ON= 12.6v straight to pink/white wire.
Ignition ON= 6.3v with jumper wire on -coil side to earth.
All wires disconnected = 1.6 Ohms across terminals.

So I think that tells me a ballast wire is still wired in, using the wrong coil also?

I gather I need new white wire 16a (ordered) and a non ballast coil that shows approx 3 ohms across terminals, correct? Thanks Olly

Have a few spare coils, will check them out to if I can use one of them, if there working. I know one I checked today gave me 3 ohms, so will give that one a go first. Will report back, once I have it all wired in. Cheers for the advice all.

Did you not say that you are running a 65D distributor with the factory electronic ignition?

If so, you need the electronic ignition coil which is not 3 Ohms.  Dave will be back soon and I'm sure he knows the number for the coil you want.

@Doug I went to the first post and yes its there the OP is using a 65D4M distributor so the only coil you can use with that distributor with  the module is a GCL !43, and yes you still need the new coil feed

O.E Electronic Ignition 89-on DLB198

This is the standard coil as used on the late Mini with factory electronic ignition. This was a Genuine Rover fitted part on 1275cc. GCL211 is the same equivalent as GCL143 but from Unipart. 1 ohmn between the + and - terminals.

Hi Olly hope your getting your head around this, I'm in the same situation at the moment regarding p/w wire and y/w wire and just reading through your thread to see if it helped, just wondering if you could post a few pics up of your setup.

Glen
