Really should move this to the 'other projects' section i think, It certainly is turning into one!

So i split the turbo today

And this is the CHRA which i can hopefully rebuild when the kit comes through.

P1050562_zpsd988d3b5.jpg

I stupidly started dismantling it without marking the corresponding positions of the castings but luckily, it was so gunged up that i could easily see how it went, bolt it back up and then scribe the positions. Phew!

On another note where this has been a kiddy car before, the inside is full of crumbs and general detritus which i am not fond of to say the least so i have removed every removable trim like the ash trays, gloveboxes, drinks cooler box and the lids to the many cubby holes as well as the removable rear seats to bring inside and start scrubbing up.

It is HUGE inside with the seats out! And i found more cubby holes under the rear seats. Not too sure that they would be practical there as you have to fold the seats to access them but i suppose i could store things like jump leads and bits under there.

Once it's running right, i shall make a start on the couple of dents on the car like a mini project.

Cheers

Ben

Just heard back from a turbo specialist that i asked to refurb my turbo and they said that none of their mechanics would be able to refurbish my turbo because they don't have the specialist tools or know how to do it and that i should ask Renault.................... They are a turbo specialist  O_O

I don't know whether to laugh or worry?

Tell me about it!

I have done alot of reading up on the problems with the dci's and have come across alot of forum's and posts created complaining about main dealer mechanics. people take their cars to renault, be it a megane, laguna, traffic etc which all us the same engine and they all have similar faults to mine. Renault plug it into the diagnostic machine which reports no fault and they send the customer away saying there is no problem!

Unbelievable really as there has to be a fault to cause the problem. Many find that it is a coked up egr or a blocked vacuum hose etc and end up sorting it themselves at home!

Says alot for main dealers these days. They don't seem to want to manually diagnose problems...

As for this turbo company, i expected the price to be quite high but didn't expect them to tell me they didn't know how to do it! O_O

Turbo's are actually very simple in design and all basically the same component wise so why should one repair differ from another across different manufacturers unless the parts are unavailable.

I stripped the castings off on my turbo with nothing more than a 10mm spanner and to strip the CHRA, i will need a pair of circlip pliers, a 10mm spanner and an 8mm spanner. Oh and perhaps a flat screwdriver and a punch.

Hardly specialist tooling

Ok so i received the rebuild kit today and decided to tackle the turbo.

This is what the kit comprises of

P1050570_zps339c9aea.jpg

Fitting the kit was one of the worst experiences of my life. Well getting the turbine shaft out was...

You are supposed to un-do a nut and gently tap the shaft out. Unfortunately the shaft had other ideas and had fused to the turbine.

I tried wd 40 which didn't do much and then resorted to heat. After a while, it dawned on me that the threaded end of the shaft was in fact bent which is why it was stuck on, so 2 hours later i had it off.

The kit fitted ok but once reassembled, i noticed that there was still very very slight axial play. I think this is due t the fact that one of the piston rings was the wrong one so i had to re-use one of the existing ones. Luckily, it was the other one that had worn right down so it's not too bad.

I put it all back together ready to fit to the car tomorrow.

Here it is assembled on the bench.

Fingers crossed.....

I second this Ben.

It's been good to meet another person from the forum and getting to know them to the point that I'd class them as a mate.

I can also second this! I met "mini danny" on this forum, we are now really great mates and travel the 4 hours each way to visit.

Well that was pretty much a waste of 4 days and £40.

Its all back together now and runs but this happened.

P1050576_zpsf1a559d8.jpg

f ing car!!!

Found the problem quickly, It was the magical O ring on the oil feed union to the turbo. The O ring wasn't fitted correctly so it was literally pouring out.

So i wasted an hour clearing it up and sorted the o ring.

Leak fixed and i ran it up again.

So after all that work and completely ruining myself to a point where i think a hospital stay would benefit me, i have a car that runs no better than before.

The exhaust no longer leaks into the engine bay which i suppose is a bonus and the turbo works better.

So i disconnected the wiring to the injector that i replaced and started it up again and it runs no different with it connected or disconnected so there lies my problem but i just don't know what to do about it.

The air is blue here...

Just watched ya video, totally wasting your time that engine is missing compression on one cylinder, you can hear it clearly when it starts on the starter motor!!, its fit for the bin nothing else, chances are the turbo has stuck its oil in the intake and its run at 10,000 rpm until it ran out of oil.... needs a engine simple as that.
