Could be some decent parts on them that would be worth more selling on than scrapping.

Some of those Minis are probably more solid than the ones we've been restoring, more collectible models as well.

I'm sure the owners were happy with the 2K they got at the time as it was probably more than the worth of the vehicles at the time.
On a positive note - the ones that are left are more valuable

Flew by the airfield and it was crazy. Cars as far as the runway end to end. Shame but it was a popular scheme at the time.

I guess there weren't enough Montegos and Allegros left by this point to score on here. I guess another reason is that most of them were too far gone to make it worth getting an MOT on them (I seem to remember scrappage cars needed to have a valid MOT) also assume that not enough Rover Group or MG Rover cars were ever sold to be able to get on the scoreboard.
However, I'm sure that I will still cry when I see the figures for Maestro, Montego, Rover 800, Metro, Allegro, Maxi, Marina etc as they are part of our history. I think from memory there are around 32,000 Minis on the road and a similar number SORNed, and there will be those not on the system. Compared to the mere hundreds of the likes of the Marina and Montego (I know many more Minis were built), Minis are doing ok.
I do worry about the demise of these models as they are our history and like with Minis, people do remember them and they hold stories and memories. It doesn't matter if they are good or bad stories, they are stories, memories, and have played a part in peoples lives.
I'm a keen advocate of the Unexceptionals (the one unexceptional but their mere existence now makes them exceptional) and shout about them at every chance. Here's was an event that I was involved with and helped to promote earlier this year - http://www.theminifo...-de-lordinaire/
My latest Unexceptional push is to get some representation within the London Classic Car Show - http://www.thelondon...carshow.co.uk/. When the publicity about the show came out, it appeared to me that this show looked very much like a show for high end people with high end cars - not for the likes of me, my BLARG friends and our cars. I got in touch with them (that was a few months back), told them politely that the latest new thing in the classic car world is the Unexceptionals/'My dad had one of those' and they were a bit old hat to leave us out. Well, after a few emails to are fro, although I still think they think I'm as mad as a box of frogs, they have invited me up to the big smoke for a meeting as they have decided that they would like these cars to have some representation and they think I might be able to help on the ideas front. It's the Leyland Princess' 40th next year, so I would like to see that celebrated in some form within the show. So, me and the guy who owns the oldest known surviving Montego (he paid £400 for it earlier this year, with a full MOT and in reasonable nick), are off to see how the Unexceptionals can be included. Wish us luck!

To put the scrappage scheme into perspective it really didn't cost either the government or the dealers anything at all.
The Gov't put in £1000, but they got back more than that from the VAT on the new car.
The dealer just knocked £1000 from the new car on-the-road price, which was less than their profit margin, plus they got the servicing work for at least the first 12 months on most new cars supplied. You could buy a 6-month old new car for at least £1500 less than the showroom sticker price and still get a long warranty.
So who actually paid the £2000? Well, the buyer who traded in his £2000 worth of old car.
Of course, the scrapped had a scrap value, but I'm not clear where this 'weighing-in' money went, not the value of any salvaged parts.
What a con!
