To put the scrappage scheme into perspective it really didn't cost either the government or the dealers anything at all.

The Gov't put in £1000, but they got back more than that from the VAT on the new car.

The dealer just knocked £1000 from the new car on-the-road price, which was less than their profit margin, plus they got the servicing work for at least the first 12 months on most new cars supplied. You could buy a 6-month old new car for at least £1500 less than the showroom sticker price and still get a long warranty.

So who actually paid the £2000? Well, the buyer who traded in his £2000 worth of old car.

Of course, the scrapped had a scrap value, but I'm not clear where this 'weighing-in' money went, not the value of any salvaged parts.

What a con!

What Car published an article the following year showing the some manufacturers had managed to increase the cost of their cars by more than the £2000 discount during the scrappage scheme

I wonder why they don't man it like a breakers yard and let the public in to purchase parts from the cars just like a breakers yard?

Then they would only need to crush the bodyshells and unwanted parts.

I think it would be a hit and wouldn't take long for the cars to be broken down either.

Are the cars still there or are these old photos?

The scrappage scheme was back in 2009 so would doubt they would still be stored there?

I'm not reeeeeeeally sure what can be done with them.  The yard that has them must have a contract to crush/destroy them so surely wouldn't be allowed to sell parts off them?  But then, who would ever find out if a few of them had a few bits missing?

I dunno, I do agree with what was said earlier.  It was the choice of their owners at the time and this was back in the day when a decent, normal Mini was only worth a grand or so at best.

It was obvious at the time that the dealers had hiked their prices up to compensate, but the models I looked at had gone up by around £600.  I'd been looking at buying one for a while, then this scheme came along and I got offered crazy money against the new Clio.  The government were just trying to poke the car market with a big stick and get it moving (a little like they're doing with the current help-to-buy scheme at the moment).  It was a pretty see-through plan and if people wanted to go for it, they did :D

The vehicles were supposed to be processed through the normal end-of-life facilities which mean't they could be dismantled and used for parts through approved contractors. Ironically many vehicles went back to the original manufacturers if they ran there own E-o-L scheme.

So if you take Ford as an example, not only did they get a huge boost in new cars sales, they also managed to get around 20% of the scrappage market through their own contracted dismantling services, so effectively made money twice on each new car sale!!!!

This would perhaps explain why they went to the trouble of grouping similar makes and models of cars together on the airfield, as I presume the transporter trucks must have been arriving with a random mix of traded in scrappage cars from the dealers.

Looks like it, apparently only around 30% went to general scrappers with the rest going back to manufacturer specific facilities

Jags actually faired worse than Minis, over 740 Jags were traded including over 40 XJS models.
