Hi all,

Engine

Std 998 crank, balanced with VP2 bearings. High capacity oil pump. Centre main strap. Bushed rods and +0.040" Hypatec pistons. MD274 cam. Standard 12G295 head with 28cc chambers, stainless valves, unleaded seats and double valve springs. Duplex. Std gearbox rebuilt with new bearings, centre oil pickup and 2.95 CWP on a 4 pin Diff. Heavy duty verto clutch on lightweight steel flywheel.

So the engine has only done a few thousand miles since being rebuilt.

Since putting the engine in it always had a slight smoke from the tappet cover breather.

Took the car to the rolling road and it had a slight smoke from the exhaust on the over run and the rolling road said it was probably the valves? but nothing to worry about, he checked the compression and it was good.

Since the rolling road I have only done a few hundred miles when on Friday, I was on a fairly long run on the motorway and there was a lot of stop start traffic, and the engine started to over heat so I turned on the heater and the temperature stayed at the halfway point.

Got to the half way point and stopped for five minuets then on the way back got stuck in town traffic all was well, then I got to a round about and the car just bogged down and there was a small tap rattle, but the engine still accelerated but slowly but the engine started to over heat.

Pulled over at the next safe point, turned of to let cool, car started again but wouldn't idle, and there was a fair bit of smoke from the tappet breather and coming out the rocker cover cap, the tap was faint, but as soon as I started to move it got louder.

I have looked on the forum and it looks like the smoke is caused by the piston rings, but I cant see how as its a (rebuilt engine)?

Here's a video

Thanks for reading, hope you can assist as I need the car for uni next week and I would like to get to castle combe.

Many thanks

Not sounding good.

I would suggest doing a compression check, and see what that tells you.

Does look like piston ring failure the way the smoke is bellowing out of the oil cap.

Rich running when first running the engine in may have caused the bores to glaze over and the rings not bed in properly.

May be worth doing a compression test

Could be a leak on HG cyl to push rod hole - but unlikely - unless head stud weak

my money is on ring / piston damage - sadly

hope I'm wrong & it's something simple

compression test & look at plugs will reveal more

Thanks for the replies, looks like I need to buy a compression tester, any recommendations?

Does sound like you have a cracked or leaking manifold which could explain the sound but not the smoke pumping out of the rocker box

Cheers james

I hate taking my car to garages, but if that's what's needed then I shall do that. I will have a ring round tomorrow.

All you need is a compression and leakdown test, wouldnt be expensive to diagnose
