Hi folks, got an austin mini 1985, shes been great runner for me but got a starting issue when it gets cold. as soon as the temprature drops i seem to get a flat battery. the starter motor makes this clicking noise when i try to start. Once i get it jump started shes fine and will start the rest of the day no problem. Few things i think it could be.... Earths, dead cells in battery, starter motor?

any help is appreciated

sounds very much like a worn out battery. weak batteries always suffer when the vweather is colder.

check the wiring connections are clean and tight on the solenoid on the left hand inner wing and that the solenoid is screwed tightly to the wing.

Voltmeter time, test the voltage of the battery after its been standing 4hrs and then again engine running at 2000rpm and 13.7-14.3v is where your looking for.

I had starting problems, the brushes on the starter were worn out. Quite an easy fix in the end!

Try some padding round the outside of the battery to keep it warm over the winter.

Try taking it to a Halfords near you and they will put their battery tester on it. All halfords have been kitted out with new Battery Testers that can see:
-Voltage + Amps
-Starting Volt drop + Amps used
-Charging of the battery with loads (lights, wipers, heater, radio)

-Charging of the battery without loads
It also tell you if the battery will need a good recharge or if it needs replacing.

Plus its free for the battery test and its while you wait

what would you use for padding?

Padding (insulation) will only slow the heating or cooling down. Overnight it will still get as cold.

I had the same problem. One it was a weak battery, got that sorted. Two there was rust on the connections to the battery (removed and it helped). Three the connector to the starter was loose and wasn't making a good connection.
