I have a 3.2 TT which i love, I also own a 225 TT BAM which is the same as the S3 Engine. Both are phenominal engines in their own right and I could go on all day about them but I won't because that isnt what this thread is about.

My daily is a 2002 Ford Ranger King Cab and the thing is fantastic. Great for towing, great for my dogs, I use it for fishing and it is also fantastic for shooting and getting out into those hard to reach shoots out in the back end of no where. Excellent for snow, great for mini shows, loads of room, 5 decent size seats, great for a bit of green laning, Selectable 4wd and diff locks (in RWD with the diff lock in the wet is great for a bit of sideways action), MPG is great and its paid itself back with the amount of times i've been asked to move things for people.

Downfalls - You look like a pikey

Only reason that i would sell it would be to upgrade to something newer, Navara or a Izuzu Rodeo.

I love my E90 BMW 320D as an all round great car to drive as do most magazine road tests, however....

Used diesel cars will be cheaper soon.......after years of governments encouraging diesel cars with tax incentives they have suddennly realised that the lower CO2 emissions comes with greatly increased pollution of the air in cities. Expect also to see EU scrappage schemes for diesels soon to clean up London and Paris.......

Thats very dependant on whether petrol cars can actually catch up with diesel cars in terms of real world economy, especially with the new EU economy tests coming in. Really I dont know anyone that considers the particulate emissions and NOx levels when buying a car, which is the main issue for governments over CO2 emissions now. People often consider economy and VED. Both of which are often (not always) better with a diesel, especially as you tend get more ponies and torque to go with your cheap road tax and good economy!

I myself have no problem driving either. My concern is more around the expensive bills that come with a modern diesel once it reaches a higher mileage. Injectors, pumps, flywheels, turbos, EGRs, and DPFs being the main culprits. Theyre all expensive to replace and can often write a modern diesel off because of the sheer cost. A flywheel alone for my Mondeo is over £1000 fitted by Ford!

Governments can make it difficult or expensive to choose diesel cars though........already some councils are charging more for diesel parking permits and considering banning or charging more for diesel cars to enter cities like London to meet European air quality standards.

"From 1 April 2015 Islington council is introducing a £96 annual (equivalent of £1.85 a week) surcharge on resident permits for diesel vehicles to protect residents from the health risks associated with diesel emissions."

http://www.islington...-surcharge.aspx

My BMW 320D with full service history but out of warranty needed a reconditioned turbo at 60,000 miles which was £900 fitted by an independent garage......not an uncommon problem when you search the car forums.

For me, it's just another excuse to rip residents off. Charging an extra £96 for a parking permit has nothing to do with protecting the residents from the health risks, it's about an easy way to make extra cash with absolutely no cost associated to it. If they really wanted to protect residents from the health risks, they would just ban diesel cars.

Life is already expensive enough. Diesels were pushed as favourable over petrol for years, and now conveniently it's petrol cars again. Any further scrappage scheme is nothing more than a false boost for the car industry and to get people spending money they don't need to spend. The sooner we can have a European referendum and get the hell out of Europe and being dictated to, the better. But alas, we have a namby pamby government that will just bend over and take it like they always do because none of them have any balls to tell these idiots in Europe where to go - and it's not just this its a whole raft of issues. The EU and the government can't just keep moving the goalposts for the ordinary working class people whenever it feels like it.

The only good thing is it may well result is some really very cheap diesels on the market. Scrapping a few thousand cars for no real good reason, as well as the production of extra cars (and the cost & pollution of getting them to the correct market) above the level of what may otherwise be produced to fill the gap is not exactly great for the environment either. Bunch of words I cannot use on a public forum.

I know that was off topic and I apologise.

How do you rate those Anon?

I have been thinking about buying one for near on 2 years now. I wanted one to use at brands and take out to the ring in the summer but I am worried that i am going to be disapointed by it. I would be buying a rough one for around £1500 as it will probably end up on its roof, I realise its not a figure that is going to break the bank but would be interested to hear what some one who owns one thinks.

Do they live up to the tales of an excellent car?

I would be interested in seeing photos of your one, I spoke to a guy earlier in the summer with a liquid yellow turbo that was used as a daily.

fantastic!! best value fun car you can buy, simple as. they are everything a mini owner wants and more. had a rolling road day at efi in runcorn and had 15 year old phase 1 172's doing 170+bhp.

if you're careful you can get something half decent for £1500 but if you're lucky you can do well for under a grand but beware there are some money pits out there.

they are pretty much all i do now, the odd mazda mps as well, only weak point is the gearbox but you can have a full rebuild that won't cost much. last one i sent away was turned round inside 24 hours.

Thanks very much for that, I am on Cliosport.net and have done a bit of reading but didn't really want to bombard the forum with beginner questions. They seem like a heck of a car for the money and seem hugley capable on the track which is what I am hoping for.

In your opinion, Cup or standard 172, is there much reason to buy a cup over a standard model if you are going to be yanking a majority of the interior out? Biggest lure for me to the Cup is the speedlines as standard.

Always loved them, Remember I used to pass one on my way to school, loved it.

My user name over there is either "Tomm" or "Big Tomm" one of the two. I live about 15 minutes from brands hatch, they do evening meets with track time, they also have some pretty decent prices on track and training days. I am not far from Lydden Hill either which seems to offer a good bit of track time which I would love to get into but dont really have an appropriate car to do it in. I also love going out to the ring but once again done have anything thats suited for a job.

Through my very basic deductions the CS seems to be a top contender.

cs is ok, some decent people on there. i'm a fair distance from you but give me a shout when you want one, have always got a few for sale from around a grand to £8k, that gets you a pretty much built to spec track/competition car.

£1250 would buy you this phase 1, has just had full gearbox rebuild, synth gear box oil, new clutch, water pump, track rods, ends, discs and pads all round, fresh 5/40 fully synth oil and probably a few other bits i've forgotten about!! drives really well
