Glad your ok. I once did exactly the same in the wet coming up to a right hand bend. The back end stepped out and I had no time to correct. I rolled it. Every panel was dented except the roof. It was down to sportspack wheels on the rear had a slight positive camber. I will never have a mini with heavy 13" wheels again without proper settings.

How about a 1275 gt?

Well the important thing is that you are ok. I have to say, I love your attitude as well. Right, that's done, what's next? Give me another mini, now...

Although Monty might not agree that you are prepared to just forget him so easily and move on...

Just be damn grateful that your daughter or wife weren't in the car with you.

Well the garage where it is has said that if it is written off then i can take anythink i want off it. I have no idea how this system works, how much it would cost me to get things off it to keep etc. Things like steering wheel, dash, seats. At a push the engine, carbs, gearbox etc too but i really dont know how this systwm works as ive never had to deal with it before.

I just want him back and if only i had the money and the time i would restore and repair him completely. Sadly my budget is not a big thing.

I think you can only buy it back if it is a Cat C or D? I think only qualified professionals can buy Cat B and Cat A is scrap man only? Or something like that. I'd have a friendly word with the garage and see what you can sort out with them anyway.

Glad your ok

Next job is not to go find another mini but to find out what the hell happened to the last one!

Any chance the garage can investigate further, you need to know as you still don't know why it happened? Minis don't just suddenly pull to one side unless your hub is at fault

Get them to check the balljoints first...

I will be having a good look at the cause to the crash dont worry, itll just be difficult telling cause from effect i suppose.

Just spoken to the garage and it seems most of the engine and vital parts like that are fine and in tact. So the plan is to get the insurance money then try and get as much out of the old car as possible, to try and buy a mini and i can have the extra bits either as an extra bargaining tool or as spares.

I was going to call the guys at slark who have done work for me before and see if they have anything they might be willing to sell for some monies and extra parts as im sure they will have use for them. I think that is my best bet, get the best i can and then i can start personalising it all over again.

I have been trawling through the internet at all classics and the only other car that jumps out is an mg midget.

I just need to try and find something i can use daily and fit a decent amount of kit in.

Im pretty set on a mini, just need to try and find a good one that is completely different to monty.

First thing i did was burst into tears, not because i was hurting or in shock but because my pride and joy was in tatters

This reminds me of 5 years back when i was involved in a 3 car minor accident. (I was middle car) and it did hurt mind. But first thought was. Is mini ok,and got out to check it over before talking to other 2 parties.. haha oh dear love ay

When my mk1 was stolen and torched a couple of years ago the insurance company gave me back the remains to strip with no quibbles or charges, just insisted the shell was taken away and crushed at the end of it. Most of the running gear of that car now lives on in it's replacement. Maybe your insurance company will do the same?

Really sorry about Monty - glad that you are ok though, that's the main thing! If I was to part with mine now, I think I would get a Clubby or maybe a Mini van, but they all cost tho! Good luck with the hunt and best wishes for speedy recovery.

Well done to Monty for giving up his life for yours. He deserves a medal & a hero's burial (or something).

So glad that you lived to tell the tale. I bet your family is too!

I would get another mini & see what organs Monty can donate so that other mini can live on.

Actually, shouldn't there be a mini organ donation register?

OK - what should happen next.........

The insurance company will assess the car to decide whether they are going to fix it or just pay out it's value. They might accept the word of the garage or photos they provide on this and therefore never actually send an inspector. If an inspector does come out then they will also be watching to see if there are any undeclared modifications or parts that weren't in the contract and which they may be able to use to void the contract.

If the decision is that it's written off they will make you an offer of the value of the car pre-accident. If you had an agreed value then that's what you should get with no argument - if not then be prepared to prove what your Mini is worth on the open market (adverts for similar cars, club valuation etc.). Once you accept an offer and the insurers pay out then legally it then belongs to them and it's down to them whether they will allow you to pull bits off it or buy it back. The garage that it's being kept at have no say in the matter as it's not theirs - they will bill the insurance company storage fees and recovery fees if they went and got it. These costs can be significant so the insurance will want it resolved quickly which gives you a bit of leverage if they are being difficult. Once this is resolved the insurers need to dispose of the car.

Depending on the category of write-off it may be possible for the car to be sold on as repairable, parts only or crush only.

The insurance company are unlikely to be interested in getting their money back by selling a relatively low value car as salvage so they'll probably just tell the garage to dispose of it once you have accepted any offer. Garages often assume this will be the case and their mechanics make free with parts before it's resolved - so if you are going to buy it back be sure as to how much is left before you do it.

This lot assumes a fairly standard policy and actions by the insurers. Different insurers have slightly different procedures - some will always recover the car and dispose of it themselves without even entertaining the possibility of the owner buying it back whilst some are fairly free and easy with the remains. Some policies specifically grant the owner salvage rights - some don't.
