Hi, I am wiring in a Mk4 loom into my van with a 1275 MG Metro engine. It goes like a stabbed rat, but I have no alternator light at the moment (at all( and it's all a bit Tommy Cooper - rather than Mini Cooper when I grind to a halt.  I have noticed that there is a redundant black and white wire near the alternator. Any ideas about what it's for and where I should connect it please?

Thanks

Adam

The short black and white coming out of the loom near the alternator is ,eat for connecting to the dizzy, it only runs as far as the coil.  What is connected to the alternator?  You need to have a no-charge light for the alternator!

Mk4 loom should have a thin Brown/yellow which is the charge light wire, no Brown/yellow on the alternator = no charge

Thank you both, I think I do have a brown and yellow but I will check tomorrow and get back.  If the black and white wire near the the alternator is an earth and all is well, do I still need to connect it to the coil?  If memory serves me correctly there is also a black and white redundant wire in the cockpit

Thanks

It's not an earth, if you earth it and it's connected to the coil you will stop the engine running. How is the dizzy connected to the coil presently?

The wire is actually a White with a Black tracer, White/black its on the Coil - terminal connected to the points, the spare White/black in the dash area is for a rev counter pickup

Another thing to check is the actual globe, it forms part of the exciter circuit for alternator. (on mine anyway)

And don't replace the normal bulb with an LED ... that doesn't work either!
